I was listening to the radio and caught the lyric:

"You don't have to live out in the sticks, with an F150 and a thirty ought six"

It got me to wondering how you would explain how universal the 30-06 is to somebody who knew nothing about guns. So picked the Tool Analogy. I would say the 30-06 is like a 12 inch adjustable wrench, it might be a bit too big for some bolts, and a little too small for a few of the big ones, but it will work on almost everything.

Any other cartridge/tool comparisons? 22 LR? 45 ACP? ETC?

.22 rimfire is the swiss army knife, .45ACP= punch press, .44 Magnum=meatgrinder

I think it depends on where and how you grew up. In Nebraska everybody knows that a thirty ought-six is a deer rifle, in more urban environments maybe not.

In handguns I would pick the forty-five. Every handgun cartridge is sooner or later compared to the forty-five.

Rifles? You can’t go wrong with an ought six.
