I stripped the threads on the post that holds the expander in my .30-06 die.

I wasn't lubing the inside of the case neck, but now I'm figuring I should.

How do you do it?

Q-tip and pad-style lube? Spray lube and just get some inside? Other?

Thanks

I use Hornady One shot. I lay the cases out with the mouths all pointed in one direction, and then spray the lube from a 45 degree angle so that some gets to the inside of the case mouth. Then roll the cases over and do the other side. Size, then tumble for an hour to remove the lube.

I place a handfull of cass in a plastic sandwich bag and spray a few shots of Dillon Case lube in the bag and shake. Sometimes I stand up the cases and spray at an angle to hit the case mouth.

I put a couple of drops of RCBS water soluble case lube on a stainless steel tornado brush. I think the brush was 38 caliber. I used to use nylon 38 caliber brushes, but they wore out.

Recently I purchased a carbide expander spindle for my RCBS small base in 308. I think Hornday makes the thing. You don't need to lube the case neck with that.

I wash cases after sizing in hot soapy water, so all the neck lube comes off.

Hornady makes the carbide expanders for RCBS but I'm not sure they make them for their own dies...

I'll have to check...:)

How do you dry the insides of the cases after washing them?

Before a spray, I used the RCBS pad with their clear lube - they had two different sized nylon brushes on the green handles - you would roll the brush on the pad and then give each neck a quick stroke - basically like using a bottle brush

That's what I do too.

But before that, I would just dab the case mouth on an RCBS lube pad.
It will pick up just the right amount of lube without getting too much.

You don't even have to do every case. Once the expander gets some case lube on it it will carry over to the next couple of cases at least.

I do each one with a brush because it probably does make for a more uniform expanding job on every case.

I use Imperial sizing wax and after I have coated the case, I just run my finger across the case mouth. This seems to put just enough lube on the opening to size it smoothly. +1 for tumbling after sizing.

I just scrape the case across my finger/palm after I've lubed the rest of the case. I always check to see how much it scraped off. It usually puts a fair amount on there. Works for me

and +1 for the tumbling after as well. I like my brass to be clean and shiney

Every second case across a fingertip after lubing the body with Imperial or wire-pull lube.

I'm partial to a dry neck lube, contrary to everyone else, it appears. I don't like the typical lubes because it always seems to grab a few powder granules (which probably doesn't hurt anything, but bugs me)--and I don't like to mess with tumbling. The above generally applies to neck sizing, which I do as much as possible. If I have to go to FL sizing, I'm partial to a bit of Imperial wax, then I find that the dry lube (Motor Mica is what I use) tends to gum up with the Imperial, so instead I'll dab a mini dose of Imperial inside the neck.

If your neck-lube is getting powder stuck in it, you are using WAY too much.

As noted earlier, a nylon bore brush rolled on a case lube pad is plenty for a lot of case necks.
And that's not much!

I too agree with Moosehunt and Taliv. Dry lube (but I have tried most of the others mentioned above). Another option is available from Sinclair Intnl. Imperial Dry neck lube. Comes in a small tin like the wax, I just dip the case neck in the tin and sometimes but not always wipe off the exterior.

Imperial Application Media
Simply dip the cartridge case neck into the ceramic media. Media consists of high density ceramic spheres pre-charged with Imperial Dry Neck Lube. Works for 17 caliber and up.

I do the same thing except with Hornady Unique sizing lube.

One of the reasons for tumbling after I resize is to remove any lube from the inside of the neck. This eliminates the powder-in-the-neck problem.

I use a old graphite set of brushes. works well and seems to last for ever. I have also used the spray lube . I ran into one custom reloader who uses Pam for case lube. A large can lasts him a while he says.

I hate to bring this one back up from the dead, but this topic talks about lubricating with mica. Could powdered gypsum be used instead?

It's about the same hardness, and non-corrosive. Also, there happen to be gypsum deposits near my home. Thoughts?

On some I use a carbide expander ball, on a couple I use bushing dies, and one I use a brush with a little RCBS Case Lube II on it.
