So I have been shooting my 40 for a while now using longshot. I have bought plated bullets in the past, but I just started casting my own. Unfortunately Longshot is the only powder readily available in my area. I am wondering if anyone has some load data for lead bullets. I checked Hodgdons website, but they dont offer any data for cast 40. Also my lyman 49th does not list longshot as a powder. Thanks again for the help.

In my experience, for the same bullet weight and similar bullet design, substituting a cast bullet for a jacketed bullet will give lower pressures and higher velocities.

140 gr. LRN: 8.2 to 11.2 grains Longshot
155 gr. LRN: 7.2 to 9.0 grains Longshot
165 gr. LRN: 6.6 to 7.5 grains Longshot
180 gr. LRN: 6.0 to 7.2 grains Longshot

As there are many types of nose designs, the OAL's will vary of course. The best tip is to taper crimp at the front edge of the crimping groove... and as always use the starting loads and work your way up while looking for high pressure signs. I personally use ALOX to lube cast bullets, works great and less mess and stink at the range. Good shooting!

Sorry I could have definitely put more info in this post. I have the lee 175-401-TC mold. Also for lube I powder coat all of my cast bullets. These usually come out to 178 grains when everything is said and done.

That data for the 180 grain LRN will be just fine for that bullet you're casting. I also have done the powder coating, but found that it limits the velocity before lead fouling occurs while the ALOX coated bullets can be pushed another 1000 fps or more before any leading problems, but to each their own as the saying goes. Good shooting!
