My wife surprised me with a new rifle in .308, A Savage Model 11 Hunter XP. I haven't dealt with a new caliber in a long time.

I use a gas check 168 gr cast bullet in 30-06 and 30-30 sized to .309 to good effect. This is for moderate loads, under 1,800 fps.

Can I use the same bullet in medium power .308s? It will be for target work only, maybe out to 300 yards. Would a lighter bullet, perhaps a 150 grain, be more appropriate for this caliber?

Thanks for any help.

Jeff

No reason why not as the .308 uses the same bullet diameter. Just find data for the .308 win. Lyman's manual lists loads for the .308 Win using their cast bullets from 113 gr to 200 gr.

If those bullets work well in your 30-30 and 30-06 they will also work just fine in your .308. Load some up and don't forget the range report when you shoot them...

Your 168 grain mold should work very well.. it's probably the sweet spot for many/most .30 cal rifles, including your .308. Let us know how it does!
