I always clean my molds with rubbing alcohol very very thoroughly and then smoke it with matches. Using a lighter didn't deposit carbon inside the mold.Might have to clean and smoke it more than once. Sometimes the slightest nook can cranny can be a pain to clean.

I do the very same thing with my molds. I clean them with a little rubbing alcohol thoroughly and smoke the mold with matches. When I first started casting I used a candle but then I found that by using matches it was a lot more easier and it's very effective.

I scanned all of the posts and didn't see any mention (accuracy +/- 80% ) of not putting your iron moulds into the lead - it can crack them. I do leave the mould sitting on the rim of the furnace as it heats, which does help it warm up, and I also acquired an infrared thermometer which works very well (Harbor Freight on sale for $20 - reg price $38: http://www.harborfreight.com/non-contact-infrared-thermometer-with-laser-targeting-60725.html)
