I have never CC[except a hot loaded .45 Ruger Vaquero pocket carried for bears in city parks-didn't what to upset the spandex crowd with open Carry.] Anyway, I have thought I would give it a try. The problem is the only gun I have remotely suitable is a S&W 1917 .45 ACP. Is this at all practical, or is the gun just too bulky for CC? I really like the gun, smooth as silk DA and a glass like trigger break.
Any thoughts/experience? what would be a good holster?

That completely depends on you.

Try tucking it (unloaded!) into your waistband or under your belt and pulling your shirt over it. Tilt it about fifteen degrees forward if you want to. Move it around, from about 1:30 to 5:30 if you're right handed. If it's reasonably comfortable and hidden somewhere in that area, it's all good.

For a quick and cheap holster, try High Noon if they have one for that model. IIRC, the shape is pretty close to 1911's. For a higher-end, I'll endorse FIST Inc.

Seems ok at 1:30[as I am doing this I am thinking OK here we go, another Plaxico Burress] and that was with fairly tight jeans on. But how is that relevant to the holsters you mentioned?

I carry a 4" N frame in 45 ACP daily. It rides in an old Bianchi or Safariland holster. That holster will soon be replaced by Pancake from Simply Rugged. The barrel on your 1917 is only 1 1/2" longer so I don't see why you couldn't carry it.

I suggest that you get something much better suited. You won't regret it. If revolvers are your thing, a used. 2" 38 Taurus, used, for $300 or so, for front pants pocket carry, but a P11 keltec 9mm, once it's checked out and tuned up, is a lot better. Used, about $250. I recommend that you use the CorBon 100 gr PowRball ammo for defense, and practice with whatever ball ammo is cheapest.

We'd need to know your frame size :) I've got a few friends that are taller and/or chunkier than I am, and the size of the guns they can carry without printing sometimes astounds me.

Entirely depends on you, what you like, how you carry
a little chick 90# and 4' nothing can hid a DE if she wants, its all in how you are willing to do it.
