Hi all, Im currently in the market for a new carry gun. Currently I have a 1911 that i bought a couple holsters to carry it, but its too big for me and digs into my flesh when concealed. I have run across 3 choices, the Ruger LCP, Springfield XD9sc, and CZ P-01.

Why these:
LCP: price, pocket size, fit hand but would want the mag extensions.
XD: love the XD line and 2 safeties. Again, fits hand but would want the mag extensions.
P-01: absolutely love how it feels in my hand. most comfortable compact IMO, very good rep on here.

Of the 3 the closest I have come to testing any of them was a XD9 4" service, and i personally loved the feel of the gun. But im looking for something smaller.

Right now a local shop has a used XD9sc for $350 as well as new LCP's on sale for $250. The P-01 isnt anywhere near this price point at over $600 at any shop around.

Which would you guys prefer?

thats a good price on the LCP. Have you shot one before. I have one and the only good thing I can say about it is that it fits in your pocket. It really is pretty hard for me to shoot accurately. 380 is pretty hard to find to be able to practice it enough to really get good at it. I reload but the dang thing shoots the brass so far away I'd have to carry a passport to find it.

I can't speak about the others.

the shop with the sale has one in their rental case, i really wanted to test it today but there wasnt a lane open, and they had a decent sized wait to get in. The place was swamped.

LCP for $250 should be in your pocket right now. GO Back and get it before it is gone. Sure it's not a 357 or 40 but you can't even tell it is there. Plenty of good holsters and accessories for it and it is a ruger. The sights suck but you should be able to point it at something up to 25' away.

Every carry gun I use changes my lifestyle.

I carried S&W J-frames in my front pants pocket for two years, and I hated it. I also hated shooting them and didn't shoot them well enough for my standards, although I shot them a lot. A fellow range-goer let me fire his LCP once, and I hated it. It was just way too tiny, and I'm not impressed with the ballistics of the round. Not to mention the lack of .380 ammo nowadays.

The P-01 is the most comfortable 9mm pistol I ever shot, but the DA/SA trigger was a deal-breaker for me. For one thing, I could barely reach the trigger when the gun was decocked. And another, I very much prefer to deal with only two states in my carry guns ~ loaded or unloaded. Adding "cocked" or "decocked" to the equation makes four possible states. To be fair, I found the decocker on the P-01 to be much easier to use than the decocker on my Sig 226.

For carry, I prefer good and comfortable "range" guns that are smaller than service models, but still have close to a full grip. I reject the idea of "carried a lot and shot a little." I shoot my carry guns way more than I shoot my non-carry guns.

I own and carry an XD9sc and a Ruger SP-101 revolver. I also carry an XD9 tactical.

* One layer of shirt ~ SP-101 IWB at 1:00 or in a fanny pack.
* Two layers of shirt or sweatshirt ~ XD9sc IWB at 1:00
* Short jacket ~ XD9sc OWB at 3:00
* Long coat ~ XD9 tactical OWB at 3:00

I just bought a 380 LCP last week and have now run a box of Winchester generic ammo thru it and so far love the little gun. You are right about the 380 ammo situation...there isn't any for sale out there. I'm fortunate that I had a stash of ammo left when I sold my PPK plus the dealer allowed me to purchase 2 boxes of the new Hornady 90 gr HP's. Plan to run 2 magfulls of the Hornady's thru my little Ruger to insure it will handle them tomorrow. As I said before, I like this pistol and it's a keeper. :).

You're comparing an apple with two oranges. Well, and even those oranges are pretty different in their manual of arms. I agree with Ichiro... I like there to be only one kind of trigger pull every time. Be interesting to see what you go with.

I agree fully, the selection I have is sort of random. I think it'll come down to how I like the lcp after testing. Right now I'm leaning toward the xd since it's the only one I've actually shot a varient of.

The lcp wasn't a consideration till I saw the price.

my take

1) I have the LCP--nice gun for concealment...not so great for hitting what you shoot at. Plus, it isn't pleasant to shoot. It has been reliable for me with all ammo...no feeding issues since I bought it.

2) I also have the XD SC. Great gun...incredibly reliable and amazingly accurate for such a short barrel. I love the XD line and have multiple XD's.

If you had to buy just one, get the XD SC. It's a great gun! Everyone I talk to who has one is amazed by it.

(I don't know anything about the third gun on your list. Sorry.)

The XD at $350 is a awesome price as well and if used and that is the listed price, I would offer $325 and you will be out the door for $350. If I saw one today at that price and it was in good shape, I would buy it on the spot.

Back to the start, what holsters aren't working with the gun you actually like (1911)?
Any gun is a pain to pack in a crappy holster, or with a cheap belt.

Among the choices you have listed, I'd go for the XD9sc, in fact there's one in the household, and possible a second one soon.

LCP - nice pocket gun, but with good concealment gear you can carry bigger, shoots expensive ammo, no fun to practice
CZ - sounds like it is out of your price range for now,
XD - two passive safeties, zero manual safeties, tough, fairly compact, eats cheap ammo, fairly inexpensive mags, affordable and fun to practice with, lots of holsters on the market specifically for it

With any pistol, a good belt (no, the one you picked up at walmart, sears, or the gap isn't as "heavy duty" as you think ... disregard if you already have a real gunbelt, of course) is a necessity, and a decent holster just as important. If I was in your situation, I would save a few bucks and go with the XD, and spend the saved money on belt/holster/ammo/mags.

the shop the XD is at is a big name in CT, do you think theyd still bargain some?

bigfatdave: i have a high noon IWB and a desantis speed scabbard OWB. The IWB i find is tough to reholster the gun with, not a lot of structural meat to keep it from collapsing. The OWB is a lot better feeling, but im a relatively big guy and it still digs into my gut. I find its the most comfortable at 4 o'clock, but it still digs in.

As for the CZ price, i wouldnt say its out of my price range, but its towards the limit i would want to spend right now. I just started a new job so Im seeing this as a reward purchase :)

XD pistols are everywhere, it can't hurt to try, and being willing to walk away is step #2 in good haggling. Step #1 is to have cash, and point out that you won't be forcing them to eat a transaction fee. If they won't move on price, at least try for more mags or some ammo tossed in, if this is the same shop that had a packed range, you can always ask for some free range time ... but if they won't make a deal that makes you happy, there's always another XD out there somewhere in a shop that is happy to drop the price or add in goodies.

As far as your holster issues go ... I know about nothing about the speed scabbard, but looking at High Noon's website, the IWB holsters look like nicely made pockets with clips ... there are better IWB options out there, personally I really like the hybrid leather/kydex ones with offset clips and a large leather paddle. They're ugly, but since the goal is concealment, who cares? I went with CrossBreed, but there's other makers out there (the KHolster and the MTAC come to mind), so pick the one you want when you decide on the pistol you want. My CB Supertuck is really easy to re-holster with, it stays where I leave it, and the weight isn't noticeable because the clips are spread away from the bulk of the gun. Those one-clip pouch deals are nice because they fit a lot of guns, and are easy to put on or take off, but for us bigger guys, they just don't sit right.

In my area, all of the gun shops will haggle, even on new stuff. Anything that is used is definately game for haggling.

Do some looking on guns america, gunbroker, search google for "wts springfield xd sub compact 9mm", etc. You won't find any XD 9mm Sub compacts that are $350. I have been watching for a while as this gun is one of a few on my list. $400 would be a great price then add transfer. Most are 450-500. One that is $400 won't last long.

Of course it depends on the condition but if it is 90% and has all the goodies as new then you are good.
