Looking for a CC suggestions, but with a bit of a different twist, maybe. I would also like it to be reasonably accurate and comfortable to shoot as I would like it to double as a range pistol. This obviuosly means some compromise which is why I’m asking what your thoughts are. I currently have a Dan Wesson 15-2 (.357 Mag.) and a Sig SP2022 in 9mm. I enjoy shooting both, but they’re too large to carry concealed, at leat on my modest frame (5’ 8” and 135#). I’ve rented a number of different pistols at a couple of local ranges and so far what rises to the top is the S & W Shield. Tried the Kahr PM9 and P9, didn’t like either, the PM9 is just too small and short in the grip and in spite of shooting a revolver, the trigger on both just didn’t work for me. Tried the Walther PPK/s, a Ruger SP101 and several 1911 pistols. I tend to prefer polymer over steel and aluminum and I’m only considering 9mm. If you need any more information to make a suggestions, please ask and thank you.

If you're looking for a semi-auto there is nothing wrong with the Shield but it's light and you might not want to shoot it a lot at the range. I'm not much of a semi-auto guy but I do own a 1911 and a Glock G19. The Glock is easy to shoot at the range and fairly easy to conceal. I probably wouldn't buy a Glock again and opt for a SIG instead.

If you're looking for a revolver and it will double as a range gun I suggest a all Steel J frame revolver. They weigh ~23 oz and are more comfortable to shoot than 12 oz or 15 oz revolvers. I own a S&W M640 and M442 and the M640 is a lot easier to shoot well and can be shot on extended range trips.

Of course if a larger revolver is acceptable a 3" K frame is probably best. (used of course)

All things being equal, bigger guns are easier to shoot. Smaller guns are easier to conceal. My wife prefers the feel of her M&P 9c, but can comfortably run a box through her Shield 9 without discomfort. She was unwilling to try the Shield before she got her carry permit. Now we each have one, and often carry them.

I went through the same drill with a buddy not long ago. Settled on the Shield. He loves it. Easy to carry and fun at the range. It's not noticeably snappier than the 9c.

another vote for the Shield.

I'm now not liking recoil cause of arthritis and the Shield's perceived recoil
is akin to a 22LR... minimal at best.

mine is a fun range toy ( after practice) with its short or extended magazine.
accuracy out to 25' is ~3" groups (2" if I disregard the 1 inevitable flyer )

a recent sale of the SAS P938 caused me to buy one. accuracy is better, no flyers,
but recoil is more pronounced for me than the Shield and while an excellent SD gun, that makes the 938 less of a fun range gun.

If the shield is too thin or small for you, consider the M&P9c. It's bigger than a glock 26 but smaller than the 19. In my opinion, it's the perfect balance between size and capacity. There are so many choices out there it's dizzying. Take your time and don't rush into anything.

A CCW gun that doubles as a range gun. You didn't specify caliber.

Glock 26
Ruger SR9c
S&W M&P Shield
Kahr PM9

There are others, but these are some suggestions.

If you don't consider the Beretta Px4 Storms (any size) for CC and range work you may regret it. That and the Glocks 26/19/17. I train for SD and do range work as well as carry these concealed.

Good luck! Lots of great choices!

Surprisingly the Shield makes a great range gun (at least in 9mm) it's a pretty soft shooter and 100-200 round sessions are easy if you have enough magazines. If you like shooting out to 20 yards (maybe 25 if you're good I'm not) the shield is up to the task. I haven't shot it much on paper but mostly just banging steel and 7-20 yards it's pretty easy, this gun shoots like a much larger pistol.

9mm is my caliber of choice and thanks for the suggestions; hadn't considered the PX4.

I picked up a Ruger LC9S Pro recently and fell in love with the trigger. The gun is accurate, easy to shoot, super easy to carry and the trigger is amazingly good. Glock and other striker-fired gun manufacturers could lean a lot from this design. And this from a long, long time Glock shooter. Check one out. You might be surprised.

I really enjoy shooting my Shield (9mm). I also carry it comfortably IWB. It is the only firearm I have that I can say this about.

You've already said it....the Shield. Almost the perfect CC pistol. Dead solid reliable, accurate at 20 yds, slim and easy to conceal, easy on the budget.

Sure it could be a little shorter and lighter, but that could take away from it's awesome accuracy and shootability.
