I am going to be hand loading both smokeless and black powder rounds for use in a single action army clone and a rossi 92 lever action. These are both chambered in .45 colt.

I will be using 35 grains of goex ffg for the black powder, and 8.5 grains unique for the smokeless. Starline brass will be used and 255 grain keith style wad cutters will be used.

I am wanting to know if the CCI #350 magnum primers will be safe to use with the smokeless rounds. Haven't made up my mind between USFA or New Vaquero, but neither will be able to handle Ruger only loads.

My reason for doing this is to be able to stock only one type of primer.
Thanks in advance.

You can use magnum primers with smokeless powder but depending on the powder, sometimes you won't get as good a results as with standard primers. You're right and should definitely use a magnum primer with Goex powder. What smokeless powder are you going to use in those 45 Colt loads? If it's Unique it won't be bad. just remember to start at the Min charge and work up because you can't be sure what effect the magnum primer will have on pressures. (although I've found it to be minimal)

Welcome to the forum and keep us posted on the results...

Stocking just one type of primer for the same calibre does make sense to me.
In theory the magnum primers would contribute to a sharper initial pressure spike with wider variances over the chrony.
But in the field these differences seem to be rarely detectable at handgun ranges and in carbines chambered for handgun rounds.
Like ArchAngelCD suggests, workup from starting loads.

This is an opinion and not a scientific tested fact:

I would be a concerned about using a magnum primer in a large volume case with a fast powder such as Unique and pushing a reatively heavy bullet.

You may want to check out Winchester LP primers as they are suitable for Standard and Magnum loads and they state that fact on the box.

Hmmmmmmmm...I had not thought of trying Magnum Primers for .45 Colt Black Powder.

I have just been using plain old 'Remington' Large Pistol Primers.

What sort of difference would I expect?

WLP primers make life easier. You can use them for anything (pistol that is).

Oyeboten,
It's highly recommended you use magnum primers with black powder. The hotter ignition aids in a good burn of the black powder and aids in a more consistent round performance. You will like the results, I'm sure of it...
