CCI Blazer aluminum case 9mm--looking for input

I used to shoot a bit of it when I lived in Reno and it was available. I never had any problems with it. The best I have found in Mt is Miwall reloads at $85 per 1K. That is a great price.

I doubt the cracked case was due to the design, it may have been bullet setback from rechambering the same round too many times.

Why would you be rechambering a round of target/range ammo numerous times?

Good plan, but unless you are willing to do Houston tour to stop at every Academy store in town you are unlikely to find more than a 1000 rounds in stock at any one store. Good ammo and a great price, my wife and I shoot lots of it, but its rare when I can find more that 1000 rounds at a store, I'm happy if they have 10 or 12 boxes. Since I drive by two on my way home form work (bummer of a commute!) its not too hard to keep supplied as they restock pretty frequently but don't seem to stock very deep -- its a loss leader I assume, I wonder if their parent company also owns CCI as I've never seen it as cheap anywhere else.

Sorry wally, but this is untrue for many of the store. Oshman's used Blazer 9mm as a lost leader, but Academy does not. I have purchased multiples of cases from stores in Lewisville, Dallas, Ft. Worth, and even Austin (on vacation and was heading home). Since I don't have an Academy in my home town here in north Texas, I make my trips to Academy worthwhile by usually buying 2-3 cases at a time.

CCI is owned by Alliant Techsystems Inc (ATK)

ATK also owns and produces Federal, Speer, Independence, Estate, and Fusion ammunition. They also own RCBS, Outers, Ram-Line, Alliant, Champion, Redfield, Weaver, Shooters Ridge, Gunslick and probably a few others I am forgetting.

Oh yeah they also own and operate the Lake City ammunition plant.

And that doesn't include their other stuff like rocket motors (yes real outer space rockets) high-tech weapons systems and other gummint hush-hush stuff.

My guns like it and it's cheap. I shoot it mostly in .40 & .45 and it's cleaner and hotter than any other practice ammo I've used. I still toss in a variety of brands just for the hell of it, but I could easily get by with nothing but CCI Blazer. The $3.89 a box for 9mm at Academy is hard to beat.

I do the same thing you do with my Ruger semi-auto pistols. I try to feed them everything under the sun, and they always seem to work. I have had good luck with Blazers aluminum cases, and it's tough to beat the price. The only problem is that some ranges won't let you use anything but brass cases -I guess the brass scroungers hate removing aluminum/steel cases. I've had good luck using the .38/.357 Blazer aluminum ammo in revolvers as well.

I'm not talking about other Academy stores, only the ones in Houston. The OP was planning to buy five cases or there abouts on his next trip to Houston.

Admitedly I've only bought Blazer 9mm from a little more that half of them, but if one of the Houston stores stocks it deep enough so I could buy three or four cases at a time I'd sure love to know which one it is!

I've no connections to the gun business so I don't know, but if its not a loss leader and Academy is not part of the same conglomerate as CCI, it makes me wonder why the next best price you can find for the stuff is about $1 a box more! (ignoring shipping).

ATK has a multilevel dealer pricing structure.
The more ATK products you purchase the better prices you get.

My guess is that Academy buys a lot of other ATK products and therefor gets a much better deal on ammo. Blazer AL is also cheaper to ship than brass cased ammo.

i think it's 9.89/50

Yeah see, that's what I figured. That's not as spectacular of a price (comparatively) as their CCI 9mm is to what you find 9mm online. That works out to $200 a case for CCI .45, where you can get it $155 a case at midway.

No way can you touch Academy's 9mm CCI price anywhere online, probably not even with reloads. You would think they could get the .45 cci around $8/50. So you are sure those are aluminum case? Because that's the same price as WWB .45.

You can't find 1000 rounds of 9mm at a STORE?

Several of the local gun shops have several cases (500 rounds) of 9mm in stock at all times.

The local Sportsmans Warehouse has over a million rounds of centerfire handgun ammo in stock at al times.

Hell's Bells™ There's three dealers at the local gun shows who each bring at least 50 cases of 9mm to each show.

I figured we'd be considered pikers up here compared to Texas.

I was pointing out a problem with the Academy stores in Houston for the OP who wanted to stock up (5000 rounds?) on his next trip to Houston -- none that I'm aware of stock the 9mm Blazer very deep, and if you get there after me they'll usually have none for a while :)

They have lots of more expenisve 9mm ammo in stock, but the only only ammo the Houston stores stock deep is 12 ga -- literally mountains ot the stuff you have to walk around to get to the handgun ammo counter.

Given that their price on other Blazer calibers where its pretty easy to match or even beat, I figured the 9mm Blazer was a "loss-leader".

I have over 2500 trouble free rounds of .45 cal Aluminum CCI Blazer 230 gr FMJ through my 1911 without a single problem of any kind. I use it both for range practice and USPSA competitions. As near as I can tell, it is as accurate as WWB. I really haven't notice either one being cleaner or dirtier than the other. I have bought it from Natchez and Midway depending on whichever is cheaper. Shipping for 1000 to my home in Northcentral Florida is right at $20 from eiteh place or about $1.00 per box of 50. That makes it about 15% less than WWB from Wally World. Plus, I don't have to go into Wally World! :)

I have about 250 rounds of the 9mm Aluminum CCI Blazer 115 gr FMJ through my XD. I've had a couple of FTEs and, therefore, only use it for practice and not competion. It is about the only type of ammo that my XD has not eaten 100%. On the other hand, it loves WWB which means I do have to go to Wally World anyway. :cuss:

For practice ammo, it is a great value.

$3.86 for 50 rounds

I think I'm going to pretty much literally cry when I have to move back to the PRK and pay the SALE price of $5.99/50 at Turners.

Academy Sports.....When you're too cheap to pay Walmart's prices! :D

Living in clear lake area, I have three academy stores within 3, 10, and 15 miles of me (League City, Almeda, and Pasadena respectively). I've never seen them out of 9mm CCI, but never noticed how much they had in stock altogether either.

Today I went in to the Leauge City store, and in addition to all the loose boxes they had up on the shelf, they happened to have three boxed cases sitting up on the counter they had not put away yet, and I grabbed one. BTW almost got away with $3.86 for the whole case! Happened to me once before years ago at walmart (w. .22's)- the bar code on the outside of the case is keyed for ONE of the twenty boxes inside, not for the whole case. I would have just "not noticed", but the cashier asked me straight up if it was 3.86 for the whole box, so I didn't try it.

Anyways, League city had 4k rounds of 9mm blazer. If I hit all three in my immediate radius I could probably get pretty close to 10k rounds. Very confident a dedicated ammo trip to houston would get you 10k in a day.

What they need to do is get their .45 CCI down to about $6/50. THat's what they NEED to do.

Funny you should mention it, but the League City store is the one that has had zero 9mm 115gr FMJ Blazer in stock most often when I'm buying and has never had an un-opened case on hand.

My wife and I have been shooting 2+ cases a month for the past six months or so. Either you got lucky, or they've decided to stock it deeper! I hope its the latter!

--wally.

Edit: the whole case ringing up for $3.86 when scanned has happened most of the time they've had un-opened cases, and I've always pointed it out to them. Alemeda & Gessner are the other two on my route. Alemeda has nt yet had zero boxes for me, but have often had zero boxes after I left :)

Dude we must consistently go on different days of the week or something. I have never seen them out of it.

I know they get trucks in 2x a week, but not the same days for all locations (I used to work at the Texas City location by Krogers in HS- it's closed down now, remember it?). So since those cases were sitting up on the counter yesterday (thursday), I am guessing the other day they get a truck is Monday.

That's weird, but with as many locations as we have around here, you have no excuse to be a victim to empty shevles. You gotta make a few calls and hit where it counts.

Like pick up those two full cases in LC today!

Wednesday and Friday are usually the days I can swing by. Texas City is a bit too far south of my normal stomping grounds, or I pass straight by on my way to Galveston. Don't think I've ever been inside its city limits. Pasadena I know reasonabley well.

Again my only real point is if you are expecting to walk out with four or five cases (what the OP was planning on his next trip to Houston) its not likely to happen at any one Academy store in Houston as I've never been fortunate enough to get our ~2500 rounds a month with only a single stop.

Anyone remember what Wal mart charges for the Blazer 9x19? I know it is less than WWB in 50 rd boxes but not much.

Within trivial driving distance, there are three Academies!! Two on possible ways home. :neener: :)

I shoot Blazer 9mm Al in matches and classes. Have for years. Never a hitch. I also did their 40SW for bit - no troubles.

I did have a gun store commando give me crap about Blazer when I was buying some, so I spoke harshly to him :fire: and he was quiet after that.

Wow, the dredged up old ammo threads hurt. $3.86 for 9mm.

I wasn't shooting 9 at the time (I am now!) but .45acp Blazer was $8, IIRC. The good old days of 2003.
