I have a Ruger Old Army on the way, and have heard that Remington No. 10 caps are the hands down best cap for this pistol. Thing is, none of the local gun stores stock the Remmies. I picked up a pack of CCI No. 10 and 11, hoping one or the other will work.

What has and has not worked for you guys? I'm really hoping I don't have to order a bulk carton of Remington caps...

As an aside, I've heard quite a bit about TRESO nipples. Are these worth the upgrade? Do they need to be sanded/polished, or anything like that, or are they just drop-in?

I have not found Remington caps to be better - or worse - than CCI caps. They are a slightly different size, and so will work better on some nipples and worse on others.

The geometry of the nipple/hammer interface is key to cap function and it's a very complicated thing, influenced by many difficult to control details. It varies from model to model and even from gun to gun within a given manufacturer and model of gun. We tend to want to simplify the problems we find by saying that one brand of caps is better than another, when the real issue is that one size/brand may satisfy the geometry better than another on just that one gun. It may be completely different (or the same) on another gun or model.

So, whatever I or others may recommend may or may not work for you. In short, it's a crap shoot. Based on that, I certainly wouldn't order a case of any one size or brand of caps for any one gun without having tried a hundred or so first.

Treso nipples have a good reputation; whether they are worth the $20 or so per gun depends on how bad the current combination of caps/nipples are on the gun you have. They are a 'drop-in' solution; no sanding/fitting is needed. One advantage they have is that you know the cap size they are intended to use, so that pretty much narrows the search for caps down a bunch.

Now for a short rant: Nobody specifies the length of after-market nipples. You can't buy, or even know in advance, how long the nipples are, and yet that is one of the most critical pieces of geometry in the hammer/nipple interface. So, truth be told, you have no idea if the replacement nipples you order will truly fit and function in your gun. One thing you can be sure of is that they won't be the same length as the original nipples; whether they will work better or worse is just a wild guess. But, you have no choice. Spend the $20 and hope for the best...end of rant.

I've been studyin' this for awhile, and have recently learned the following:
CCI caps are smaller diameter than the equivalent sized Remington caps.
Remington #11's are considerably shorter than 10's, and shorter than any CCI. I have a Ted Cash pistol capper that the Remington 11's will flip over in. It's hard to cap when the cap is upside down.
Anyway, if a Remington #10 is a bit tight on your cones, try a CCI#11 next.

I shoot them all same results....Bang..... CCI seem to be harder copper than Remingtons both stay on the nipples of my guns colts and remingtons. Some are a tighter fit than others but all work for me. My walker is suposed to have #11 nipples in it but #10 fit fine. Try them all except #11 magnum.

cci the only thing around here for me. i would like to try out winchester as i shoot winchester primers in all my other guns and they work very well. Funny for large rifle. I seemed to always have problems with cci. This is why i use Winchester. i have not had a ftf since i switched to Winchester.

CCI's seem more prone to sending scraps of metal flying in my experience, but generally, they work just as well as Remington caps.

My biggest problem with REMINGTON CAPS in the Phoenix area, is finding them.

It's either shoot CCI or nothing. I'm not going to pay hazmat for caps.

That's my thing: I really don't want to pay hazmat for caps. I have a new tin of CCI 10's, and an older tin of CCI 11's...hopefully one or the other (or both) will work.

dixiegunworks.com ships percussion caps without any haz mat fees and their prices aren't too bad on the caps. It's where I get most of my caps.
