We hear all the time about ammo being scarce / guns sold quickly off the shelves. But is there any evidence (anecdotal or statistical) to suggest people are also applying for there carry permits in shall issue states in increasing numbers?

There is in Texas. The DPS was taken to task by the Texas State Rifle Association last year to explain the very long delays in renewals and new permit processing.

DPS had to document their reasons for being way behind and a very sharp increase in applications was the cause. DPS had to hire extra people to get the timeline back inside the mandated window.

The law here gives DPS only a certain amount of time to get permits issued and they were way outside of that.

I'm sure other states are seeing the same thing, but it's pretty well documented here in Texas because of the requirements placed on the Department of Public Safety by the legislature.

Arkansas is apparently running 500-1000 extra permit applications per month and I was specifically told when I put mine in that it probably will go over the legal 120 day period before I get mine. There is no gaurantee except a permit in the mail or a written denial.

I got that 120th day marked on the calander and can only just wait.

Think about it.

We have several shops in our state. All or most of these shops hold at least one CHL Class per month or per week for... 5-20+ students per class.

Now add up the number of availible classes for the month and you got a pretty good idea of potential numbers of applicants coming down the "Pipe".

Say... 9 of 10 will pass the class, half for revolvers and half semi auto permits and maybe one or two of that group in class will have a snag somewhere in the system for a variety of reasons too many to list here.

All of that in arkansas gets mailed to one office downtown or hand delivered to the Concealed Carry Permit at the Arkansas State Police Barracks and thence to the FBI and State checks along with fingerprints.

Getting a set of fingerprints was as easy as visiting the local PD early monday morning and asking for a set and explaining who needs these and why.

In my state, the fees for the CHL Process gets deposited into the State Police fund and I think right about now, they must be feeling flush which is good for them. They have endured some dry times these past few years.

At the county clerk's office the lady that signed my application said that CCW's is all that they've been doing all year.

Great:rolleyes:

My class back in February was packed to pretty much standing room only with probably 40-50 people in the class. Yesterday was the 45 day mark since I sent in the application, which is what the state police website is showing as the average time for processing a permit. I'm probably calling Monday to see if that is still correct, since I have to be out of my apartment at the end of this month. No clue what to do if my address changes before the permit is even issued.

I took my ccw class in utah. They said something around the lines that they predict that the amount of applications they recieve 2008-2009 would be as many as the 13 previouse years combined.

Way up in Florida.. the Department Of Agriculture is the licensing authority, and is putting on about a hundred more people to work on these applications. Because the same agency also licenses security officers (armed and unarmed), it's also putting a hurt to people out of work that decide to explore that profession..

Here in south Texas, CHL classes at all the local gun shops are booked for months. One shop told me it would be late July or early August before they could fit me in.

Last Saturday I went into the local, and I over heard a buyer being told that NICS was not taking anymore calls that day.

That was around 12 PM.

Also the range below was filled to capacity for a CCW class. It sounded like 50 gallon drum of firecrackers in the store.

All of the CCW classes I've been aware of here in SC for the last year or so have been at capacity, with a waiting list.

Overall the trend seems favorable. As well, somebody that goes to the trouble and expense of getting their CHL would VOTE if their rights were threatened. I just figure the number of new CHL holders is a more promising statistic than increased NRA membership.

SLED says applications are up 100% since January.

There are 78k CWP holders in SC.

My CWP instructor teaches a class of 20. He does this two weekends a month. That is 480 applicants per year from just one instructor.

Yeah, Id say the app rate has soared. I see alot of guys on forums asking about becoming instructors.

Yeah, everyone wants a permit these days LOL

Yeah, last I heard, they had a backlog of 95,000 (!) applications and were going to apply $3.9 million of their newly acquired "stimulus" funding toward hiring new workers to process applications.

When I applied for mine a few years ago, it took me 28 days to receive it in the mail from the time I sent it in. A friend of mine who sent his application in early November just got his permit in the mail two weeks ago.

Colorado

THis is for 2007:

http://www.gazette.com/articles/applications_34059___article.html/

DENVER - Applications for concealed-carry weapon permits in El Paso County rose 87 percent in 2007, fueled partly by several highprofile violent incidents locally and nationwide, said Sheriff Terry Maketa.

Permit applications rose 50 percent statewide and more than doubled in 18 of Colorado's 64 counties, according to a report issued Monday by County Sheriffs of Colorado.

And from 2007 to 2008 there was another 68% increase in El Paso county.

Then there's this from the Colorado Springs Gazette from march 2008:

El Paso County Sheriff Terry Maketa wants more guns - not for his deputies, but for citizens. “Offenders in the jail system tell me they avoid crimes against people because they know there is a very high concealed-carry rate,” Maketa told The Gazette.

But it’s not high enough, and Maketa said he wishes more citizens would train to carry concealed and apply for permits. El Paso County has the highest number of concealed carry permits in the state, at 8,400 - a statistic that makes public safety advocates proud. But El Paso County also has a higher population than any other county in the state.

Even more surprising is that the local press agrees with him.

Man, am I glad I moved here.

CCW classes here in Florida are booked at most gun ranges , gotta make reservations in advance (something i gotta get on the horse and do myself asap ?!?!?) and hope that your trainer's gun shop dosent price gauge for some of the steps towards the permit ?

ONE HUNDRED AND TWENTY DAYS!!!! Fer Chrissake that's FOUR MONTHS!! What bunch of bozoz wrote a law allowing a four month lag time between application and approval/disapproval? The standard should be THIRTY days and if they can't meet that then a provisional permit is mandatory.
