CCW as President of USA?

Okay, let's get real.

1. Vladimir Putin knows how to use a gun because he spent 17 years in the KGB.

2. The Secret Service was not charged with protecting the President until after the assassination of William McKinley in 1901. (How about some quick justice? Anarchist Leon Czolgosz was tried, condemned and executed in less than two months following the shooting.)

3. Most heads of state do not go armed other than those who have a military commission and wear swords on ceremonial occasions. Castro, Arafat and Hussein carried guns: do we really want the President of the U.S. lumped in with them?

4. Dreams of what one would do as President need to be tempered. The President's ability to change things is limited by the Constitution. Congress makes the laws. Even if one of the members of this forum were elected President, he/she would find in short order that they do not have the power to authorize concealed carry for anyone.

5. The federal government is pretty strict about who gets to carry weapons. The rules for carrying a weapon as a federal officer require that you be a federal law enforcement officer. BTW: The "chief cop" is the Attorney General.

6. The President is immune from prosecution while in office, so he/she could not be hassled for carrying a gun. If the President had a concealed carry permit, I don't think the Secret Service would make a big deal of it other than asking the President to let them handle the protection details. In all likelihood, they are better-trained and better-armed than the President would be. As someone mentioned earlier, the President trying to deploy his own gun would just add to the confusion.

7. It would be nice to have a pro-gun President. It's been a while. Harry Truman was a gun owner and a member of the NRA as was John F. Kennedy. Eisenhower didn't say much one way or the other, but his brother Milton was in favor of gun control. Richard Nixon once told William Safire that "guns are an abomination." Gerald Ford was a supporter of gun control and in favor of a 15-day waiting period on gun purchases. Also supported the Brady Bill and AWB. Reagan supported the Brady Bill. George H.W. Bush banned the importation of "assault weapons" and said Americans should only be allowed to own "sporting" firearms. Clinton we know about. George W. Bush said he would sign a renewal of the AWB if it came to his desk and his administration filed a brief supporting Washington D.C.'s gun ban.

ADKWOODSMAN: Let's shy away from the political comments, especially when they have nothing to do with guns. This is a fun thread, we don't want to get it closed.

IMHO: If you are carrying a gun for personal protection - as the democratic leader
of a civilzed nation .... you´re doing it wrong :)
