Hello all..
I am new to THR, I have done much reading here and once or twice jumped in and posted.

First of all keep up the good fight, it is refreshing to know what I suspected all along. There is a silent majority of people with their heads on right yet left in this great nation.

Enough with the niceties...;)

I live in SoCal and have recently applied for and been denied my CCW. I you guessed L.A. County....you win.

My letter of denil states that persuant to their policy, I have no good cause.

The policy reads:
".....Typically, the verbiage "convincing evidence of a clear and present danger...."refers to a current situatuationwhich involves a specificperson(s) who has threatened an individual and who displayed a pattern of behavior which would suggest that the threat(s) could be carried out. Situations which would suggest that the danger to one's safety, (e.g. carrying large amounts of money to the bank, profession/job, working late hours in a high crime rate area, etc.) are not consistent with the criteria for issuance of a concealed weapon license.

Now, I just got off the phone with Lieutenant Goldman at the LASD. He was very polite and did a great job of citing the Sheriff's policy on CCW issuance.

I informed him that my concerns are around the weak areas of my security plan, that is, when I leave my office to get to my car, car to house, and house to car again. I further let him know that their policy is very well written to describe a situation which is highly unlikely but for a most unfortunate few and that Imake it a point in llife not to deal with people that are unstable or ever deal unfairly with anyone so that I would get caught in anything like the described situation.

I let him know that I will appeal in writing as a matter of principle, and to voice my disagreement with the policy.

Thanks for your time, and if you have any sugestions for my appeal letter please let me know.

God Bless...

What was the reason you gave for you 'good reason'?

I have heard (gawd I hate writing 'I heard..', sorry) that for Los Angeles County, applying for a CCW and using the reason of "Personal safety/protection" or any variant thereof will get you DENIED for sure. However, I have heard that using "I carry large amounts of cash for business" will be much more likely to get you approved.

This is just hearsay, I have only recently heard this and have not had the opportunity to try it myself being out-of-the-country as I am at the moment. Anybody tried this?

Depends on the county. Some sheriffs are pro-CCW, some are anti-CCW, some are in between. If you know the mayor, you have just shown a "good reason."

California, among other things, is a textbook case for why shall-issue is the only fair law.

My good cause satement had to do with carrying expensive equipment late at night or early morning, as well as large amounts of cash.

As far as giving it a go for a CCW I did this because a) This is my only legal recourse. b) I was propmted to by Jim Bowen at http://www.firearms-training.info/pages/10/index.htm.

He informed me that last year Los Angeles County issued more permits than Orange County. I would rather try it myself and form my own knowledge base.

As far as using "Personal safety/protection" you are correct, instant denial got this from my call with the Lt.

Thanks guys..

good for you to follow up on matter, if you show that your a reasonable individual and that your persistant, and if you can talk to the right people you may win out on this, I was able to get my permit in a low probable area, but I think it was mainly due to being military and all my references were military and police. ofcourse if all else fails you can wait until HR 1243 gets passed then you can just go over the boarder and get the permit in NV. Good luck to you and I hope it all works out for you. Keep us posted of all updates

rero360,

Thanks for your post.

I have decided to get the Utah CCW exactly in the event that HR 1243 picks up steam. I have sent e-mails and made phone calls to reps. and others to push for this to become law. Any news on HR1243 you know of?

Are you in L.A. County too?

nah, I'm not in L.A., only been to Kali once, napa valley, san fran, montaray that general area. I'm in upstate NY, the county I got my permit in has been historically hard to get permits in, no real prob for me other than references dragging their feet. good luck with it.

I just started thinking, you could go to the police and request a police escort at the times when you'd be most at risk of being attacked, tell 'em how you have all the money and expensive equipment and all that, and when they say how they don't have the manpower, funds, and time to do so, then politely request for the permit, its a lot cheaper form of personal protection opposed to the alternative. theres probably some major holes in this idea, but I'm bored and don't care :neener:

You should have a CCW long before there is a clear and present danger in a current situation. That's the whole point. :banghead:
