I have been wanting to get an H&K USP Fullsize for my graduation present from Wabash College, but I know the weapon is significantly large. My question then is, is it possible to carry the weapon consealed or would it be too large? Keep in mind I am 6' 3" and 290 Lbs. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Also on another note I have a Springfield G.I. .45 I have been wanting to replace the awful sights on the weapon, could anyone tell me about how much I would be looking at spending and Gunsmith vs. DIY? Thanks.

It's possible to conceal a USP full size. A person's shape is probably more important than their size when concealing a weapon. I can conceal my USP .45F in an OWB that rides high over the waist. All I need is a light jacket. An IWB holster with a tee shirt and loose button down cover shirt works in the summer.

The USP9 is the issue handgun of the department I work for ... I can conceal this pistol reasonably well (OWB in a quality high-rise pancake with good covering garments such as sport jacket, light coat) but this is not a pistol that'll conceal well under a t-shirt or light shirt. It's chunky and wide; the slide rail and huge trigger guard necessitate a pretty good-size holster and I just can't see using IWB with this gun.

For your SA GI, you could pick up a good set of King's (non-nightsights) for well under a 100 bucks and probably get 'em installed by a 'smith at your local shop for another 25 ... You'll need a couple specialized tools (staking tool for the front sight) to do it yourself. Unless you are comfortable and competent with tools or have experience working on guns, I'd recommend taking it down to the shop.

Its possible to carry it concealed but you have to ask yourself how often are you going to carry? Every day? If you carry frequenlty, you begin to feel the burden of a large gun on your hip and later on you may regret not getting something smaller.

One time, just to see how it felt, I carried a full size Kimber Eclipse under my shirt to go out, but it just felt awkward on me. It was not comfortable.

My CCW gun is a Glock 30. However, my buddy carries a Glock 27, and asked me "how the hell carry a Glock 30 all day? its heavy!" It all depends what fits on you comfortably. Everyone is different.

You can always get a smaller pistol for concealment now, and a larger one later.

If U can CCW a fullsize 1911, then maybe you can CCW this. It is thicker, but of a similiar size.

I can't do it.

A USP 40 is just enough smaller to make it a better candidate for CCW purposes than the .45 cal. version of the HK. With a little thought concerning finding an appropriate holster (I like the "pancake" style), the USP 40 can be an acceptable carry piece. I know because I've done it but I do prefer a slightly more compact pistol for carrying concealed on a regular basis. I'm currently toting a Smith 6906 which I consider just about ideal in terms of reliability, sufficient stopping power, compact size, relatively light weight and magazine capacity (12+1).

I agree that it depends more on your shape than your size. I know a tall, skinny guy that can carry a full-size USP .45 in a Versa-Max II pretty easily. I don't know that it would work for my body style, but it works great for him. I can carry a 1911 in a VMII all-day with only a t-shirt as a cover garment.

As far as your sights question, you may have better luck in the gunsmithing forum.

Being somewhat smaller than you...5'10" and 240...
I carry a full size Sig (226)...somewhat smaller than the USP...

Buy the cheap (black cloth) IWB from Uncle Mikes and cut off the belt clip...stick inside waist band either butt (the guns not yours) forward or rearward (depending on the shape of yours not the guns) and it will stay there all day and not be noticed unless you wear a tight shirt.

I have the middle age love handles to help with concealment...if you dont it might not work (there are some pluses to being pear shaped...weebles wobble but they dont fall down)

I carry a HK USP 40 Compact in an OWB paddle style holster and it works well. A full size would be a bit bulky & heavy IMO
