Ladies and Gentlemen, this is my first post here so I would like to start with your thoughts and opinions regarding CCW handguns. I currently own a SigSauer P226 and I am very seriously considering a HK USP 45. I am 6'2" and 220 lbs, so I am relatively certain that I can conceal something as large as the USP (full size). I have had my 226 for over 12 years, however have had to leave it with my father when stationed overseas.

I have not been sucessful in my search for a holster for a full size USP. Perhaps that in and of itself should be noteworthy, but if anyone out there has a recommendation, I would be very grateful to hear it.

I will be applying for my CCW in VA once the Navy leaves me enough time to go through the process.

I have benefited from the information on this site and finally decided to register and join the discussions.

Welcome to THR!

What type of holster do you want for the USP - IWB (tuckable/non), OWB padle or belt, shoulder, off-body, etc? There's no shortage of manufacturers producing holsters for the gun, but it's hard to suggest one without knowing what type of carry you mode you prefer.

As previously posted......lots of makers make the holster your looking for.
I dont have the mold, but make the Compact version....not that many people carry the USP.
The type of holster you want should be dictated by your dress, environment and personal preference.
The 226 is an excellent choice also. Not to big or heavy and an accurate gun with lots of ammo.
Good luck and Shoot well........Eric

I have a Para Ordnance Tac-Four,13+1 .45acp,commander length(4-1/2") barrel. You might want to give that one a hard look.I'm 6'0",235 lbs,and I carry mine very frequently in a Bianchi suede IWB with a belt clip. They are a bit more than the HK,though.I don't think I'd carry my USP when my Tac-four is more compact and holds one more round than the HK.

I second a IWB holster. I carry a Colt officers model in a Galco IWB holster and have no problem keeping it conceled. I went through a number of holster types before I decided that the IWB was most comfortable for me.

Welcome !

Your gonna ask a hard one right away huh ? LOL

My opinion is that everything depends on the individual when picking both the CCW weapon and the method of carry. There are a lot of variables and most people end up making adjustments in some way to their first choices.

Your physical stature would seem to indicate that you could likely carry just about anything in a good IWB holster and be OK. Make sure you pay particular attention to your belt as well. The way you dress should also be considered as it is important to being comfortable and yet being able to conceal.
The weapon is a matter of choice and whatever ends up being comfortable enough to fit your every day style of dress will be the one you will always have with you. Many end up with something less than a full size auto for reasons of comfort.

I pack a Taurus 92 which is a pretty big gun. That said, an IWB holster is the most concealed. I find that sitting with the gun hostered is both uncomfortable and prints really bad. I'm 6'2" 170lbs. That USP is one big gun! Good luck with that. You might consider a Safariland 1090 gun quick hoster. It's a shoulder rig made of kydex that is really pretty cool. I think if you spend any time on the road or seated extensively, you'll want some more comfortable options. I bought a paddle hoster today just to allow myself a more comfortable option in the winter (when a coat would conceal it effectively). If nobody has already told you, the process of CCW will leave you with a closet full of hosters for every gun. Enjoy the opportunity! Welcome to THR, there are lots of great posts.

I would like to thank everyone who has replied thus far. As Virginia permits open carry, I was thinking along the lines of an OWB holster. Also, transitioning from my car to a restaraunt, where open carry is required, would seem to be easier with a OWB holster.
I realize that there are as many different opinions as to what caliber is best for defensive shooting as there are people. I would count myself in the shot placement category.
Even if I don't get the USP, I would still have the 226...

Also, transitioning from my car to a restaraunt, where open carry is required,

You lost me there - could you explain ? Are you saying you must reveal your weapon and carry in the open in order to go into a resttataunt ?

in virginia, you are (or were until recently, there was some sort of opinion due from the state ag, i don't know what happened with it) precluded from concealed carry in any restaurant that serves alcohol. open carry is still permitted, subject to store policy.

vcdl is working hard at fixing this.

Thanks Pauli !

Interesting that open carry would be permitted where concealed would not.

Yup, doggone silly it is, and damned rediculous I can't take my family out to dinner to Applebee's, Outback, or any number of other places because they serve alcohol to others and still be equipped to protect them without having to explain to my 9 year old why those soccor mom's are calling the police on Daddy.

IHOP and a local Chinese place sans alcohol sales gets our family business for the most part.

What ever happened to the bill that was going to fix that ?

I been spending a couple months in AZ each winter and they recognize my MN permit there.

Minnesota I can carry in bars as well as restruants that serve drinks. We have a .04 blood alcohol limit.

Last year I did alot of traveling. I used a Fobus paddle holster. I had to switch from driving to walking to federal buildings often enough that I appreciated the ability to discretely adjust or remove my pistol. The plastic paddle wasn't great with silk boxers in Mississippi summer heat. :uhoh: At the time, it was the best balance between effectiveness and cost for me. I still recommend them for anyone on a budget. If cost isn't a factor, buy a good handmade leather rig.

Welcome VMI 1991,

You chose the right place to ask your questions. There is a wealth of knowledge to be had here from some very knowledgeable members.

There are many off the shelf holsters that will serve your needs. Custom made has an edge though. The boning of the leather, to fit your particular gun, aids in the secureness of the hold and helps to cut down on the wear of the finish as you draw and replace the gun in the holster. Plus it just looks a little nicer.

Which ever way you go, if you can, try on the holster and make sure it is comfortable and fits your needs. Money well spent if it is done right the first time.

This is just my humble opinion and it and .75 will get you a decent cup of coffee.

...You mean the "Guns in Bars" Bill? Yep, Gov. Nappy vetoed it-- seems the state politicians can't distinguish between a "bar" and a family restaurant when it comes to drafting legislation!

I tried the H&K and it is a difficult handgun to pack concealed and doesn't seem as shootable to me as any Sig I have ever had. You might want to reconsider your choice.
