I am taking the course for a CCW permit in North Carolina next weekend and plan to apply at my local sheriffs dept for the permit on the following Monday. Does anyone know how long the application takes to process before the permit is issued?

I am curious because I am thinking of purchasing a new handgun, but if it doesn't take that long to get the permit back I will just wait, to avoid having to get a pistol permit too. Once I have the concealed carry permit I would not need a pistol permit in NC.

The application process is very quick. Walk in, fill out form, take fingerprints, pay $, done.

The department has up to 90 days to tell you whether or not you get your permit. I got mine in 2 weeks from the day I submitted the application (3 years ago). However, my dad, who just took the class, has had nearly a month pass with no word.

Waiting CC

AndrewGWU: Sir; NC law: "maximum of 90 days waiting"; different county's have different 'Sheriffs'; with different attitudes.

Mecklenburg county Sheriff is opposed to CC and typically waits 85+ days.

My shooting partner is doing the 'class' Saturday and I'll be there with him.

I'll know; when he is ?certified? I expect that even with our Sheriff retirement; his philosophy will be maintained.

I'll post the number of days. AndrewGWU; Sir; would you?

Thanks for everyones information.

I will be glad to update this when I apply and when I recieve my permit. I am in Rutherford County. It should be interesting to see how the wait time compares to Mecklenburg County.

My first one in Chatham Co. (years ago) was maybe 4-5 weeks?? I didn't renew it and let it lapse and had to reapply in Alamance Co. this past year. There it was 60 days exactly.

As everyone else said, each county is different. Craven and Carteret are both gunfriendly, but Craven has a Sherrif's Deputy devoted soley to the background check etc involved in the CCW permit process while Carteret does not. Craven takes about two weeks on average, while Carteret next door is at least 60 days.

Go figure.

Here in NC it varies from county to county and within county as well. I moved to Caldwell County in 1999 from Alaska. It took 30 days to get mine but others in my CCW class took anywhere from 30 to 90 days. When I renewed mine 4 years later it took the full 90 days. Caldwell County (Lenoir, Granite Falls, Hudson, Saw Mills, Gamewell, Baton, part of Hickory) is considered to be CCW friendly. :)

The bottom line is it varies and can be anywhere from a few weeks to the full 90 days regardless of what NC county you call home, since the cause for delay can be your county Sheriff's Department or Raleigh or both. Your local Sheriff's Department forwards all the information to Raleigh as part of the approval process.

11 years ago when I first got mine it was about 30 days, renewal took about the same. Congrats on getting your permit.

AndrewGWU: Sir; we completed the Class Sat. 2-09-08
Tuesday; Sheriff's office we go:rolleyes:

Took about a month and a half here in Buncombe.

I should warn you, the video is increadibly boring, and the acting is really bad. The old guy in the bowtie is hard to understand.

I know. The instructor mailed me a copy of the DVD to watch ahead of time. There is the monotone and hard to understand voice of the narrator, the horrible acting skills of the folks in the scenarios, and you can tell it is dated. Gotta love the early 1990s dress and cars, especially that red camaro.

Btw, I have not heard much about the written test or the range qualification. How difficult is the written test after you have watched the video a couple times and had the course? Also at what distance do you qualify at the range? Someone told me 3, 5, and 7 yds.

Yes, the video was mind numbing.

Though there was one acted scene that woke everyone up and got out attention: the one with the home intruder where the woman points a handgun at him? The BG surrenders, but she shoots him anyway. He falls to the floor, face down. Then she walks over to him and you think, "hmmm, maybe she is going to render 1st aid or something?" Nope, she instead fires a few more rounds into the back of his head, just to make sure :uhoh: ! Understandably, we were all laughing our butts off.

That was one of those "what not to do" demonstrations.

Most of our rural counties are pretty quick about it.
Here in Mecklenburg, we're just starting to come out from under the Sheriff election/corruption scandal, so I would say that there is a lot of foot dragging and 90 days will be taken.

Concealed Carry waiting period

CaliberO: Sir; follow up. With our "New Sheriff", it will be interesting.
I would like to here from all Mecklenburg residents. HOW long did you wait?

Craig 87 days.:(

3, 5, and 7 yards sounds right.

The written test is not bad. Some of our screwy deadly force laws will mess with ya on the test though.

Firearm Registration?

When I last took the class, I remember the shooting test paperwork recorded the serial number of the firearm used after the test. I would have rented one for the test had I known that in advance. Seemed like back door firearm registration to me.

Anyone know if that is still done in NC?

happen

Randon Discharge: Sir; it didn't happen with my son and myself. 1yrs ago.

Mecklenburg county, nor this past weekend when my shooting buddy did his qualifying.

He did have to make an appointment with the Sheriffs dept.
We didn't
.
We also had to have 3 witness for the Sheriffs dept. to call.
Was told this past Thursday; you don't need that.?.

Shooting partner will go March 3rd for the interview and printing?

We didn't do that. We had a small class, a good group and great instructor so it was kind of relaxed. We were swapping guns, trying different ones. I think I didn't even shoot my own to qualify (which was ridiculously easy, you can practically point shoot and pass).
