CCW Permit in NC

I did better when I started point shooting. It was hard for me to focus on the front sight when it seemed like the target was right in my face.

I took my class today. I'm in Guilford county and the instructor said if I called the Sheriff's office Monday morning for my interview they would probably schedule me sometime in May, possibly late April. There have been a lot of people getting concealed carry permits in this county and the Sheriff, BJ Barnes, doesn't have the staff to process all the applications quick enough. It will probably take the full 90 days for getting it back, so I'm looking at a total time of almost 6 months. And it's not because the Sheriff is opposed to CCW, he issued more permits than any other county for years, but the county commissioners have cut back on his funding and other services got higher priority.

Oh, and my qualification was 50 rounds at 7 yards. It's a B-27 target and 80% of them have to fall within the 7 ring.

Just wanted to throw something out there for the Mecklenburg county people:
Since we have a new Sheriff who is hopefully a decent guy (after the fiasco with the previous appointed Sheriff) perhaps it would be worthwhile to interview him in regards to these specific questions.
If mecklenburg county residents are interested, let me know and I'll interview him and write it up for THR and post it.

Here are the guidelines on the county website.

I'm told there is a new version of the NC CCH training video in the works, finally. I was a student in the very first session of the concealed carry instructor's class taught at the Eastern Justice Academy at Salemburg, and saw the tape for the first time there. It hasn't changed since... .

FYI for those who didn't know about it, a revised edition of the 'little red book' on NC Firearms Laws came out in December 2007. You can see it at http://www.jus.state.nc.us/NCJA/ncfirearmslaws.pdf . EVERY current and prospective North Carolina CCH holder should read this little book carefully.

Also, FYI for NC THR members in the Durham area (sorry I didn't see this thread earlier):

*Yes, I use a pen name on the net. This dates from long ago when I was still working for a living and had a security clearance to worry about. The Army 'owned' my real name, so I started using a pen name for personal net activities. The 'legacy' of this is that more people know me by my pen name than by my real name. Not an effort to hide or deceive, just to separate two spheres of activity- which came to have unintended consequences.

Took the class yesterday. Now it is off to the sheriffs dept Monday morning!!!

I had a great instructor (Jack Norris) who peppered the class with so many helpful tips and interesting stories and really knew his stuff. I feel as if I learned so much more from the class because of this. I was worried about the test, but both the written and the range part was much easier than I had thought it would be. Not to mention, I want a Glock so bad now after shooting the his for the qualification part.

interview

wheelgunslinger: Sir; if you would interview our new "Sheriff".

I went down this past summer to talk to 'Pendergraph' and barely got into the door. He must have been getting ?short? Dumped me on front desk person.

Maybe you can get to 'Bailey"

Can't remember if I have already posted: My shooting partner finished his stuff to take to the 'sheriff'; went down last week and had to make his appointment for 3-3-08.

I am curious is 'Bailey" going to do as Pendergraph. 85-90 day wait.

Follow up when you can.

I took my class on January 13th, took it to the sheriff's dept on the 14th and I picked it up on Feb 14th. That is Cabarrus County. The class is no problem. Our instructor noted that he had only had 1 person to fail the class. To that point, he hinted to us that noone should put a loaded gun in their mouth. No kidding, he said that a guy dropped his revolver on the range, then proceeded to pick it up and blow the dirt out of the barrel. That guy was close to winning a Darwin Award.

Mecklenburg

I got slack: My shooting partner did the 'sheriff' paper, printing thing March3rd
Had his CC 22nd April.

There has been some talk about common last names taking longer?

I would like to thread stay alive; it is curious. Different counties and different waiting periods.

I just did my class, and submitted my CCW application last friday. The sheriff's office people told me it would be about 90 days. I can update back here when they give me a call to pick it up.

(forsyth county)

also, in our class we just shot at 7 yards. easy....could probably do it with your eyes closed.

We don't know yet how long ours will take in Moore County so we got the purchase permits too.

Our class didn't have a video. We spent about half the day on legal and safety things, minimal time on the exact mechanics of concealing the gun, and half the day on the range. That particular instructor believes that range time is critical so that people can handle their guns responsibly. He also uses a harder qualifying test than the state requires but no one even came close to failing.

There is a written test that has a few trick questions on it so pay attention to the exact wording.

There was no information collected about the guns and several people were using borrowed ones.

53 days in Dare county. Just got the call on Monday, picking up tomorrow. About the same time for a friend in Currituck county.

Random discharge,
There is no need to worry about the serial number of your firearm being recorded as a form of gun registration. Instructors are not required to forward this imformation. It is solely for our records. Instructors are taught to do this as a way of limiting our liability. It proves that you actually used a centerfire (or rimfire) handgun in your qualification. If you are involved in a shooting, your instructor may be called to testify against you if you make a bad shoot. You won't get very far trying to use inadequate training as a defense if the instructor keeps good records. Sometimes instructors are called as witnesses in good shoots, too. His good record keeping may be the thing that saves you. Good records means that the instructor writes down everything. If you are sued in a civil case (a virtual certainty if the person who got shot recovers, good shoot or not) it is very likely that your instructor will also be named, either as a witness or as a co defendent. If nothing else, recording the serial numbers of firearms used in the class will help establish a carefull attitude on the part of the instructor.
We are also advised to video tape our whole class, for this same reason. The primary reason for this is to prove that there were no ommissions in the legal or gun safety parts of the course. Were you aware that in N.C. the course is eight hours long by law? Most instructors let their classes go with three to four hours. This is fine until someone, usually another instructor, turns them in, or until they have to go to court.
Instructors have a tremendous responsibility, and therefore, a great deal of civil liability. Your instructor was just covering his butt.

It took me about 30 days to get mine from application to the day I picked it up.

Gaston Co. No interview, just fill out ap and pay $90

I have had it for about 2 1/2 weeks

Application process is quick, wait time can be up to 90 days. My sheriff waited 89 in Orange County. I don't blame Lindsay though - he's a good guy and pro-CCW. I don't know what took them so long.

Anyone know about Goldsboro or Greenville? I'm going to be moving to goldsboro in two weeks and I will keep my michigan permit but would like to obtain a NC permit as well.

Just an update on mine... I saw this thread is active again.

I still have not heard anything back here in Rutherford County and tomorrow is day #87. I think I may call back again tomorrow. I called two weeks ago and everything had come in, but they said it had to be sent out to be printed and would call me when it came back.

Does anyone here know where they have to send them to get printed? I thought once the department got all the stuff back from Raleigh it would be printed then, not weeks later?

update on Rutherford County?

I am AndrewGWU's twin and I am on my 80th day of waiting and havent received a single call from the RC sherriffs department........the wait has seemed much longer

Mike7465

This is what I got from my instructor friends. It seems to go along with a previous post saying that the instructors keep the info for their records, not to be sent to anyone else.

"NC CCH Instructors are not required to log serial numbers, it was recommended that we log make, model and caliber for our records but not serial number." (emphasis mine)

Hope this helps.

So my brother called me today and both of ours are ready for pickup. Almost 90 days exactly for him. 81 for me. Simply because they are slack and like to process and print a group of them at a time.
