I heard on a radio news report the other day that some counties in Ohio have up to 3 months backlog on 1st time applications and renewals. Just thought some here may need to know this.
I search but couldn't find any articles to back this claim.

True, dat. Most counties shut down processing during the pandemic and reopened in June or July by appointment only. Look up your county Sheriff's Office website for more. this is Portage County just east of Akron. They just added Wednesday to the open days.

You can go to any county that borders your own to apply or renew.

Somewhat off-topic, but may be relevant: Good time to shop for a non-resident license/permit, perhaps? Not sure which one is the quickest to acquire, but once upon a time, at least one of the NE states, perhaps NH, was fairly quick to issue a non-resident permit, to someone who currently had a resident permit in their own state. A non-resident permit is not going to to be recognized everywhere, but it is better than not being able to legally carry anywhere, at all.

I got my Conceal Permit here in my county Island county. 15 mins @ the police department 49.25 filled out a form gave fingerprints and 10 businesses days later my permit arrived in the mail.

You can renew here as well online as long as your license renewal is within 45 days and has not lapsed. If you go beyond the day of expiration it is as if you never had one and have to start over.

I just had a tense few hours last week when I thought I had lost the card wallet that I carry my permit in. Searched all over and couldn't find it. I called the permit bureau at the sheriff's office, and they told me five to six weeks to get a replacement!

Fortunately, I found the wallet a few hours later. It had gotten shoveled into the file cabinet along with some papers I was working on. Phew!

I had no idea I was up for a renewal until I bought a gun 2 weeks ago and the guy behind the counter mentioned my CCW permit expired in October. I guess I better see what I need to do now, seems the laws and procedures have changed each time I've renewed.

This thread made me go check mine - after all, like a passport, who REALLY remembers when it expires? Renewed in 2017; good through 2025....WHEW!

I walked in to the Kansas CCW office in Topeka last week to drop off my Renewal. They said they are caught up and I should receive it in a week. They also said they are waiving the late fees.

I snuck into the sheriff's office when my state reopened and renewed. Then our numbers went up...………………….

I was lucky.

My renewal isn't until November. Looking on my county sheriff website, they don't mention anything about a backlog on permit applications.

Even though I can get permits up to 5 years I opt for the yearly instead. Veteran's day, so I never forget to get it done.

I submitted my renewal application in my county in Ohio today! Because the county sheriff is the one of charge of this process in Ohio, it varies from county to county. For example, when I originally got my license, you were allowed to apply in any contigious county, but I can't find out if that applies to renewals today. My county is a rather heavily populated county and with the Chinese virus and all, the Sheriff quit taking applications for quite some time. When he began taking applications again, you had to make an appointment on-line for a time that was as much as three months in the future. The soonest that I could find a date for an appointment was about two months out. As a result of this delay and related complications, the state created a 90 day extension period. I began trying to renew my licence in March; it officially "expired" in June. Today when I submitted the renewal application, the officer explained that my license was still good for 90 days after the original date, but only 90 days. If my renewed license does not arrive by that date, I am not legally allowed to carry. The officer also said that the "waiting" time for the licenses to arrive is ranging from a few days to a few months! Hope this helps.

Another plus of living in the sticks.
I renewed my CCW last year. Went into the Sheriff's department, said hello to the Sheriff, while the clerk took care of me, inside the office past the locked doors and waiting area window.

And... my new card was printed out and handed to me right then and there.

Couple things on Ohio. Yes, you can still get a new or renewed license from other counties that share a border with your county. Also, I have been told that what the Governor actually put in place is that all licenses are good until 90 days after he lifts the state of emergency in OH or on December 1 whichever comes first. Several firearms organizations clarified this. Check yourself but I think you are still legal to carry.

Thanks for the information about Ohio, but rather than believe you I think that I'll believe the deputy sheriff (and the Buckeye Firearms Association) who said that I'd be subject to arrest if I carried after 91 days beyond the expiration date of my original license. May want to check those sources of yours.

From the Montgomery Co. Sheriffs office website:

***Effective March 27th, 2020***
Governor DeWine has signed House Bill 197 which has extended the 30 day grace period of C.C.W. permits to a 90 day grace period. This extension will cover permits that expired from March 9th, 2020 but shall not extend past December 1st, 2020. Permit holders are still able to legally conceal carry for 90 days if their permit expires from March 9th, 2020 through December 1st, 2020.

Any permits that expire before March 9th, 2020, are still subject to the original 30 day grace period where permit holders are still legally able to conceal carry for up to 30 days past their permit’s expiration date.
