Just moved back to WV after being away for about 40 years (22 years in the Navy and another job kept me away until now). I was hoping I could continue using my VA CCW until it expires but after talking to local Sherriff's office today found that my VA CCW is no longer valid once I become a resident of WV. I asked if I could turn in my VA license for a WV license but was told "no", they need to collect another $90 and I need to have another background check ran before they will issue me a license. At least they will accept my DD-214 documentation in lieu of having to take a course. I would just open carry but apparently that's not legal in Charleston. Just thought others might be interested.

IIRC that's true in most states - once you change residency you need a new permit.

Also, when I moved to WV from VA and got a new permit a few years ago, they accepted my VA permit in lieu of training since it hadn't expired.

The WVCDL has sued the cities of Charleston, Martinsburg, and Wheeling over their anti-RKBA ordinances.

It probably is the case, just seems kind of silly when WV has a reciprocity agreement with VA. Even so, I would have thought there would have been some sort of grace period until I could get my license renewed in WV. The lady I spoke to in the Sherriff's office told me that they couldn't use my VA license in lieu of the training, but showing that I had an Expert Pistol medal listed on my DD-214 would suffice.

For those of you on active duty now, if possible make sure you get any firearms training annotated on your DD-214 when you leave the service.

I don't think they transfer drivers licenses state-to-state for new residents either.

No, in WV they took my VA drivers license and issued me a WV drivers license without taking any additional tests. I think I had to pay $10 transfer fee but they extended my license by 3 years from when it would have expired in VA.

Reciprocal recognition of CCW permits is still a new thing, and far from universal. It really hasn't progressed to the point that DLs have, where you can pretty much turn over your old state's DL, pay a fee, and get the new state DL immediately.

Maybe one day. Better yet, maybe one day, there will be no need for a CCW permit.

Who you need to check with is VA. In WA if you move out of state, your CPL becomes a non-resident CPL, but it is still valid. All you need to do is a change of address.

Then it only makes a difference in a state like MI which will only recognize a resident cpl.

You might check with VA to see if the same can be done with your VA permit.

I filed my application in WV today and was told it would be about 30 days before I hear something. Noticed when trying to find out where I could drop off the application that one way I can find out when it is approved is by checking the local paper. Apparently, they list individuals getting approved for CCW permit in Monday's edition of the local newspaper. Had to pay $75 today (non-refundable even if I'm not approved) and will have to pay another $15 when I pick up my permit (+ $4 if I want it laminated). I would have just open carried but apparently Charleston is one of the only cities in WV where they don't allow open carry.
