Just what the anti's need. I feel sorry for the officer's family. It is the first "killed on duty" police shooting in the city's history.

Twinsburg Officer Shot 4 Times In Head
Vigil Planned Tonight

POSTED: 9:28 am EDT July 13, 2008
UPDATED: 1:50 pm EDT July 14, 2008

TWINSBURG, Ohio -- A Twinsburg K-9 officer was shot four times in the head during a traffic stop on Sunday.

A preliminary autopsy was done Monday on Officer Joshua Miktarian, 33. He had pulled a car over at about 2 a.m. when he was shot.

According to the Cuyahoga County coroner, only one bullet of medium caliber was found.

Police said Miktarian called for backup after pulling over Ashford Thompson, 23. They said Thompson fled and shot at Miktarian.

Officers said Thompson was pulled over because Miktarian heard loud music and thought Thompson might have been driving under the influence.

Dispatchers tried to reach Miktarian, and at the same time, a nearby resident called 911 to report hearing shouting and a popping sound.

The K-9 officer was flown to MetroHealth Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. The German shepherd was in the car during the shooting.

After an extensive manhunt, Thompson was arrested by Bedford Heights police. A weapon was recovered upon his arrest. Police said that when they took Thompson into custody, he was still wearing a handcuff that had been attached by Miktarian.

Thompson is currently in Summit County Jail awaiting charges and a court appearance on Monday.

Miktarian leaves behind a wife, Holly, and 3-month-old daughter, Thea. Holly is a police officer in Oakwood Village.

Miktarian was also a part-time officer in Uniontown and owner of the pizza franchise Gionino's Restaurant on Old Route 8 in Northfield. He was a guitarist in a rock band called Barium.

Vigils

Twinsburg officers' wives plan to hold a candlelight vigil outside City Hall Monday night.

A makeshift memorial including photos of Miktarian, potted plants and American flags has sprouted there.

Friends and family also gathered for a vigil on Glenwood Drive at Route 91 in Twinsburg on Sunday night. That's the same spot where Miktarian was killed.

One by one, friends and family of the 33-year-old officer took their chance to remember him.

"This will be a very hard week, but I know there's a lot of prayers out there," one man said.

"It shouldn't have had to happen. It shouldn't have had to happen to a good guy like Josh," a fellow officer said.

Man Accused Of Killing Officer Claims Self-Defense
Bond Set At $5M

POSTED: 2:59 pm EDT July 14, 2008
UPDATED: 7:24 am EDT July 15, 2008

TWINSBURG, Ohio -- A 23-year-old man accused of fatally shooting a Twinsburg police officer pleaded not guilty on Monday.

Ashford Thompson appeared for a video arraignment, and bond was set at $5 million.

Thompson is accused of shooting 33-year-old Officer Joshua Miktarian early Sunday morning after the officer pulled him over on Glenwood Drive at Route 91.

Thompson's defense claims the suspect shot in self-defense, and said they have a witness that will back up that claim.

Miktarian stopped Thompson because he heard loud music coming from the car and thought Thompson may have been under the influence, officers said.

A preliminary autopsy showed that Miktarian was shot four times in the head. Because only one bullet was found, investigators are taking another look at the crime scene and could collect more evidence there.

After an extensive manhunt, Thompson was arrested by Bedford Heights police. A weapon was recovered upon his arrest. He had a concealed weapon permit.

Thompson's only prior offense was having illegally tinted car windows.

Well that just beats all I ever saw...

But its going to happen...there are a few bad guys that have never been in trouble...Thompson was obviously one of them.

Cops piss ya off...but for crying out loud, I don't think being a pushy PITA is a reason to kill somebody.

First, my condolences to the family and friends.

Second, I better remove 11 of the 12 speakers from my car if all it takes to get pulled is loud music. Or maybe I should take all of them out. I know I'm 57 and driving an old man's car, but I don't want to be a target. It's an Avalon, my father gave it to me last year and I keep telling him I'm driving an old man's car. He's 86, so it's true. Why he bought the one with the 12-speaker system I'll never know, but I'm glad he did.

"Miktarian stopped Thompson because he heard loud music coming from the car and thought Thompson may have been under the influence, officers said."

Not all the info is in yet. This "suprise witness" may actually have some information, you never know.

Sad thing about the officer though. However, shooting in self defense against an officer? Sounds like bad Juju there. Not to mention that this guy obviously ran after shooting (not good either). This kid, literally, sounds like a punk that should have had this exact situation reversed upon him. No one that is "innocent" or "justified" in their shooting runs.

He is also claiming self defense and claims to have a witness. I'll sit this one out until we have more info. There is a very tiny slim chance he might have actually shot the guy for a good reason.

i do not want to comment on the death of the officer...

how in the hell do you get suspicion of drunken driving from loud music? really... id like to know.

Same question, where does this ever mention that Thompson had a valid CCW permit? All it says is he got pulled over and shot a cop. No mention of CCW what so ever. Please either provide support, or change the title...

That, and I guess if we extend CCW to having any legally or illegally concealed weapon, then technically every murder committed with a handgun was done by a CCW'er, just not a legally licensed one :p.

Since there's no mention whatsoever of the perpetrator being a concealed-carry permit holder, can we lock this thread, or at least change the subject line to reflect the actual details of the article?

I mean, unless there is actual fact that he did have a license to carry, I don't understand why the subject line (or this post) needs to remain.

Ah I see it.

I detest people who play loud music, esp. rap or heavy metal. I think they should all be put away. But in any case the officer is dead so we really don't know all the factors that went into the stop. He certainly seems to have found himself a live one. Not sure how you can claim "self defense" with multiple shots to the head AND killing the dog while it's still in the cruiser.

where do you see it said he killed the dog? i definitely didnt see that.

He didn't shoot the dog. TV news last night said that the dog will be retired and stay with Officer Miktarian's family.

TV also reported the CCW angle a couple of nights ago. They had a prosecutor on who said this is why he opposed the CCW law.

The CCW permit has been reported but not confirmed. (It seems from the transcript between dispatch and units he did have a CCW)

As for being a punk this guy worked where I work now, put himself through school and was holding a good paying job in the medical field. My boss knew him well and thinks something is fishy with the whole story. A tragic loss for sure but I'll hold judgment till all the facts are in.

Even if the shooting was fully justified, he is so screwed. Well, one could say they're both well & truly screwed now.

The current accepted method to deal with a JBT A-hole who also happens to carry a badge is to fully submit to the abuse, and hopefully be able to handle things later.

I am NOT saying the dead officer was out of line in this situation. From what limited information we have at this time, it appears the shooter is in the wrong.
Let us work to attain truth & justice.

Dash cam. If you shoot a cop (or anyone else for that matter) you have to be crazy, intent on criminal mayhem, or have a really really good reason.

People seem like they're forgetting that the news lies and makes mistakes A LOT.

Just because the news reported that he had a CHL/CCW permit doesn't make it true. I've seen the news report all kinds of stuff that wasn't true because they'd managed to screw up their facts. I'm sure that most of the others on here have seen them do the same thing.

Most news reporters are liberal pantywaists and they usually don't know a whole lot about guns, ammo, gun handling or the process on how to go about legally obtaining one (I've seen and read them talking about buying assault rifles through the mail with no NICS checks or FFL and I've also seen them holding up a live round instead of a fired bullet and saying that that was fired and that the whole thing went through a house). Plus there's the possibility that they just took a wild guess about his carrying a gun and its legal status and didn't care about accurate reporting of the facts.

They aren't exactly on our side you know and if they make a mistake on something then they just print a retraction on their website a couple of days later where no one watching the news ever sees it. People always seem to think that just because someone took the time to write something down and print it that there's some truth to it and that just ain't so.

We need more info before we can start making blanket statements.

Also, we'll probably never know the whole story.
