Police in Columbus, Ohio released surveillance tape Sunday of an alleged convenience store robbery where the clerk shot a robbery suspect.

The alleged robbery occurred earlier in the morning at a Sunoco station in the 3300 block of Cleveland Avenue.

The tape showed a man identified as Desmond Thompson leaning over the counter and demanding money. His hand was hidden in his coat.

Police said that Thompson, 26, implied that he had a gun.

The clerk, Karen Smith, then gave Thompson some cash from the register. When Thompson backed off, Smith, 52, pulled out a real gun and fired.

Thompson was struck once in the shoulder. The tape showed money flying while Smith kept the gun's barrel pointed at Thompson, who was seen obeying commands from the clerk.

Smith called 911 and told the operator that she shot someone and he was still in the store.

Minutes later, cautious officers entered the store and asked Smith to put the gun down, before taking Thompson into custody.

Thompson was not seriously hurt. He was charged with one count of robbery.

There was no word on whether Smith would be charged for using the gun.

Despite what the story says, the perp seems to reach for something as he "backed off." If so that's a justified shoot.

Oh, and puh-leeze use two hands whenever possible...

The story on packing.org gives a little more information.

Apparently after she gave the robber the money, he gestured for her to come out from behind the counter, wherapon she drew the weapon and shot him.

It also mentions that police decided not to arrest or charge her. Note the lack of an arrest (asside from the asshat).

Now for the important stuff: :)

1. Gun make and model.
2. Caliber
3. Bullet brand.

Looks like a one stop shot.

I thought it was great to see this BIG BAD have his attitude instantly changed. One moment he's in control, with money in hand and probably thinking he'd force her into some unpleasant act, the next moment he's spinning on the floor begging for his life.

It just doesn't get any better than that.

1. I heard a radio interview where she said that she gave him all the money and only decided to shoot him when he told her to step out from behind the counter. She figured he was going to hurt her so she hurt him insted. Good one on her!

2. When I clicked through the pictures of the shooting on the linked TV affiliate's web site, there was an ad right over it for Monster dot com that said "Time for a Career Change?" :p I suppose that applies to both the hero and the perp. :D

This is a duplicate, but I'm too lazy to find the other thread.

Anyway, I don't think charges should be filed, even if she had chased the guy out of the store and shot him in the back. Oops, that wasn't PC  Seriously, I shed no tears when people such as the robber are injured. Hopefully he gets a nice LOOOOONG stay at the Greybar Inn to contemplate his actions. 80 yrs is about right me thinks....

too bad he didn't get back up after she shot, us taxpayers have to pay for his jail visit now.
