I have a Charter Arms AR-7 made in the 70's. It has not been touched for over thirty years. Who works on this?

Welcome to THR, RMC51!

I don't believe that there is any warranty support (Henry now owns the rights to the design), but any local smith should be able to fix it up for you. Fair warning: they are generally thought to be plagued with feeding/reliability and accuracy issues. What kind of problems are you having?

:)

This thing has not seen a smith in over 35 years. It is not feeding well. It is time to have it checked out.

Feeding is a oft reported problem with these rifles; I would check your magazines for damaged feed lips and maybe use a little polishing compound (valve polishing compound or jeweler's rouge works best IME) on the feed ramp. If that fails, take it to a trusted gunsmith in your area.

:)

I read the Gen's post, I will check it out. I'm also going to talk to Henry Arms tomorrow to see if they have any info or can help. I spoke to Charter Arms today, I will never buy a Charter Arms product again, they didn't give a :cuss:, Charter Arms needs to take a lesson from Glock, I had two issues that were out of warrenty and the tech boys helpped with info and then the factory stepped up and fixed the problem, I wish glock had a wider range of calibers. This probability is not the place to spout off about Glock, but if I could find one of their G25's I wouldn't even think twice about it, I'm getting off subject, Sorry guys

Thanks for the good info on this AR-7, Guys

I doubt Henry will be of much help, but I have heard that they have excellent customer service and it never hurts to ask (in fact I plan to buy one of their AR-7s in the near future just because of their CS). Good luck.

:)

I wouldn't be so hard on the CURRENT Charter Arms company,..as they are not the same company that made your AR-7. The company has change handes a couple time since, and the current folks probably won't even know what the AR-7 is.......much less be able to provide service for it.

What you have is exactley what it is,..or is not. Some were good,..some not so good. Most were bad. I have one that works well with the one factory mag I have for it,..but not worth a pound of bat scat with any after market mag. Many of us have been playing with the AR 7's for years will little success in making them a workable gun.

They were basically a great theory and concept, but one that was poorly executed. It's one of those things you really want to see work,....and ya just keep on trying.

Rumor has it the newer Henry's are better,..but I have yet to see the proof.

I actually tried GenTJWilly's mod with mine,..it seemed to work quite well. I will spend some more time playing with it,..trying to make it work,..and if it does,..I'll be pleased,..if not,..I'll put it away for a few more years,..and try another idea as one comes to mind,..or is brought out by others.

Good luck on YOUR quest for the solution!!

I had a heny ar 7 that was problematic. I traded it off for a bit less than 1/2 what I paid for it & eventually bought a marlin 70pss papoose. I consider that one best gun decisions I have ever made.

However, at the time i had the ar 7 i was unaware that appently they are ammo sensitive, so mayby trying some quality ammo will help, mayby a good mag will help. If either of those then try a smith.

For me personally, the ar 7 was a gun i wanted to like, but based on jamming issues ( an how easily the plastic knob that lines up the barrel broke off ) I just couldn't.

Good luck

KodeFore, that is a good point. IIRC they prefer a copper washed high or hyper velocity cartridge over the standard fodder.

BTW, the plastic key that lines up the bbl, has recently been replaced with a stainless steel one (apparently Henry saw the fault as well), which is good news because I didn't like this feature either.
