So im thinking about getting into cowboy action and i would need a cheap double barrel shotgun. One that i wanted to look at,the Norinco 99 with external hammers, didnt impress me as it was so stiff the salesman broke it open with his knee.

Anyway ive always liked the look of external hammered doubles, what do you guys think of shotguns with hammers vs no hammers?

Just starting in cas I would advise to look more to the hammerless guns. You have a steep enough learning curve without adding cocking your shotgun. There are several well reguarded SxS for aspiring cas shooters to look at.
My first choice is the Steoger a solid gun and easy to get to work and open easily. This would be followed by the Russian guns. Bakael, Remington Spartan, Savage 411, These are all pretty much the same gun from the same factory, which ever you can find for the best price. You can also find good prices on used guns an old Savage 311 can usually be found in the 300-350 price range. These are the best of the low cost doubles and the ones you will see the most. But than again you will probably never see anyone shooting a Browning SxS. This is not a sport that asks for that level of shotgun.
Good luck in your search and welcome to the world of CAS. You might like to look in on the forums at the SASS web site. www.sassnet.com.

There's one low-end Coach Gun I'd buy, and that's the Stoeger. It's solid. It's not available in an exposed-hammer version, so I'd sacrifice that requirement, even though I also like exposed hammers for the cool factor.

If I was going to spend money on a hammer gun I'd get the CZ Hammer Coach, otherwise the Stoeger is the way to go.

You must check out the reproduction Colt 1878 hammered double imported by, I believe, TTN. Also, the Turks have a fairly decent double gun. Both are good guns for the money.

Im gonna start looking at stoegers, thanks for the info.

I was pretty dissapointed with the norinco as i wanted to get into CAS as cheap as i could to see if i liked it, im gonna be shooting my blackhawk 45 colt so im not going for historical reproduction.

Stoeger would probably be a good choice for a start for a brand new SXS.
Lot's of folks shoot Stevens and Savage too, but they are prone to wear.
The Stoeger will eventually have firing pin issue after a lot of use.
My preferrence is the Baikal SXS, but it needs work to function quickly for CAS. There are new replacable cocking cams available now, that make the Bounty Hunter Baikal open further. There are many other tricks too. I have shot one continuously for about 5 years. That is a lot of use. I shoot at least a box and a half of shells every week. Big matches maybe 3 boxes. I have a back up and never have even used it. The danged Baikal keeps on ticking.
You might look at the classifieds on the SASS website and see if someone is selling a suitable shotgun that might have had some slicking up done.

I have a Stoeger O/U that was my first gun purchase. I overpaid by a bit, but it really is a nice shotgun. Fit/ finish is pretty good, and it shoots and points well for me. Also inexpensive enough not faint on the occasions I scratch it. I can't imagine the SXS being any different.

If you have the time to look around you might also stumble across an old "Star Gauge" (Interarms of Alexandria). When you find them they are an excellent and cheap spanish import. Pretty darned hard to find these days though. As others have said, go over to SASS and look around.

Stoeger hands down. This is a NICE coach gun that is for the Cowboy market:

Prices are between 250 and 400 for used to new Stoeger Shotguns. CAS only allows 12, 16, and 20 Gauges for adults to use. Kids can use the .410.

I have one of these and it's a fantastic shotgun. I was going to trade it for a Winchester 97 model slide actions, but decided to keep the SXS instead. It truly is a fun shotgun to fire.

Hmm i just read that you can get slip in rifle barrells for the Bounty Hunter. That would certainly make it more usefull!

I got one from www.classicarms.us Easy to open, great gun for the price.

Norinco, Stoeger, or ? I didnt see any sxs in the link...
