I bought one of those $10 1911 8 round magazines from Cheaper Than Dirt. I was already buyinf some other stuff from them and it wasn't costing me any extra in shipping to get it. I figured if it was junk I was only out $10, and one of the reviews said it worked fine in a RIA (which I just bought one of).
This is the first of at least two reviews that I'll provide on the magazine.
Okay, most of these reviews start with appearances first. I took some pictures, but THR won't upload them. Not sure what I am doing wrong, they are of an acceptable file type and within the size limits, and I have a high speed connection... Anyway, The stainless looking mag is the $10 mag (#1), and the black is a Novak 8 rounder (#3). There is a wierd follower that seems to have 2 parts to it on the $10 mag. Maybe I'll get the pictures working one day to show you.
Next, Functionality, or lack thereof. I tried shooting it today in my friends Sistema Colt Argentinian (sp?) 1911. Loaded with WWB 230 grain RN, it did not fit. It would go about halfway up to where the mag release starts to give resistance on the sistema's mag and no futher. Pressing in the mag release didn't do anything. Even trying to force the mag up into the well by tapping the butt didn't budge it. I'd say that if you have a Sistema or a pre WWII 1911 (not 1911A1), don't buy the mag.
In the next part I'll try to shoot it in my RIA Tactical. Stay tuned...
