I met this guy through a friend who gave him my email. The Reason I'm asking here is this is my first time, (I think) and don't want to post this where it's not suppose to be. I was looking for a AR-15 and he was looking for a M1. We decided to trade. He has a pre-banned Saiga 20.5 "Barrel AR -15 with 2 types of furniture. I check it out on GB and there coming back at 1200 to 1500. I have several M1 Carbines this one is a '45 Inland Hand Stamped., but I also have a Utica Bayonet and a Flash Hider , with 3 mags. 1 -30 Rd and 2-15. I just finished buying a NPM 95% Correct and he just did the same with another Rifle. We won't have to dishout no more money. I know what I have in my Inland and believe me it's worth it. Any thoughts on this Trade.

[Raises eyebrow] He's got a what now? I would get a little more information on what he's claiming to have to trade first.

There are AR's out there that are worth a straight across trade with your carbine, but AR's are at close to an all time low in price right now, and small details will be the difference between a $500 rifle and a $1500 one.

I did not realize Saiga made an AR.

Google doesn't come up with any, either.

Sounds like maybe he's got a converted Saiga .223 AK style rifle. Probably wood furniture and the standard Saiga polymer furniture included.

That was the second thing I thought; does Saiga make an AR? The first thing that I noticed was that originally the OP mentioned an M1 in trade, then it became an M1 Carbine. So now I'm not sure what's going on with this particular trade deal. A little bit more clarification is needed.

Welcome to these forums!
ARs of all quality levels have dropped drastically in $$. IMHO Just buy one. By contrast, the $$ value of that M1 can only go up up up.
I would pass, AK47 & AR15 variants are not as few & far between as a dated piece of military history...

Have a great day & again, welcome. You'll find these forums CLEAN, managed correctly and chock full of good info.

Personally I couldn't see trading any M1 for an AR. Maybe for a high end one...... But the description of the AR sounds fishy to me. If it's a converted AK, I'd be a lot more inclined to pick up a Sig 556, which are fine reliable weapons.

I'm more into history and nostalgia than AR's though.

Op, you can find basic, entry level Ar-15's online for under $550 with ease and can probably find Bushmasters under $800 and Colt's under $900-1000. Look around. You can scratch that AR-15 itch pretty easily nowadays. Your M-1 (carbine or Garand, whichever it is) is probably worth well more than the other guy's rifle.

I would not make that trade either. Even if the OP meant a converted Saiga AK (not AR). Nope.

I would also be in the No group. Something about Saiga and AR just doesn't ring out. You want a good reliable AR? Then consider selling off the Inland (around here $1,000 plus) and buying an AR. Sounds like the Saiga is a .223 AK variant and not an AR15 type rifle.

Just My Take....

P.S. Rereading the original post I think he's talking about a Saiga AK in .223 with the 20.5" barrel. It is an AK not an AR. Personally I still would NOT make that trade.

If the OP wanted an AR, this is not the right rifle. If the OP wanted an AK, then there are a lot of other options out there, at a fraction of the price for a correct M1 Carbine ...

Bottom line - a 1945 Inland M1 Carbine, hand stamp, 1945, could fetch $1000-$1300 for the right buyer. A converted Saiga is in the $600-750 range. An unconverted NIB Saiga can be had for as low as $570.

Question on who did the conversion (factory or do-it-urself ... conversions are not hard, but IMHO do not add a ton of value).

The M1 Carbine may be worth a LOT more than the Saiga. Especially if in correct condition.

Bad trade.

I assume the M-1 is GI and original, if it is, it's worth far more than that AR is, whoever made it. Bad trade. If you are thinking of doing this because you are short on cash and a straight up trade appeals to you, you should sell the carbine for a fair price, buy an AR with a better name on it, and have cash left over.

Welcome to the monkey house.

Tough choice.
I think the Saiga is an overpriced AK variant and the M1 Carbine is a valuable gun destined to become much more valuable as time goes on.

If you're up for a trade, go ahead and trade. Just not for this.

If you're looking for an AR-15 in particular, the Saiga isn't it. I'm a fan, but they're a completely different type of rifle. And IMO it's iffy on the skill involved in the conversion (if it's not factory-converted) and upkeep if someone can't even be bothered to know what kind of rifle they have.

From your information

From your posting of what he has ---- no,NO,HELL NO.

Get a picture of what he is trying to trade with, post it on the forums for all to see.

That is the very least you should do prior to going any further.

Welcome to the forums.

Saiga didn't/doesn't make ARs. They do make a .223 AK.

He may have made some mods to it like the one in the middle or bottom of the pic below, but you won't know without a picture or seeing it and you wouldn't know the quality of the changes.

Regardless, I don't think swapping a '45 Inland M1 Carbine, even if you have several M1 Carbines and this is "just another", for anything other than a mid to top of the line AR is a good trade considering what you can get for the M1 Carbine these days. You'd be better off looking at the AR threads here for middle of the road ARs and then offering to trade based on those.

I forgot to add in my post, welcome to the forum! We're glad you're here.

Also, I agree with the nay sayers. I wouldn't make the trade without some serious clarification, and then it might take money on top...
