Took the new to me (born 2002) Pardner SB1 16 gauge to the range yesterday and shot it a bit. First all, this shotgun is like brand new clean. Hardly a mark on it and a bore smooth as glass.

First up were a box of Herter's #8 dove and quail loads from Cabela's I found. Went 23 for 25 with the two misses coming in the last 8 shots. Smoked more than half, did I mention she is wearing a full choke? She is also wearing an ejector and the shells come flying out with the classic "PoP!" sound. Thought that was so much fun I stuffed an empty shell in there and closed the breach thinking it would pop out a second time. (I was checking on the mark the ejector was leaving on the brass rim). Well it didnt come out of course, you knew that right? I had to fashion a shell knocker out of a tree branch.
Great fun!

Next up were some Remington Slugger Foster slugs. I ended up only shooting 5 of those mostly because of the recoil. I set up a target at 50 yards and put the front bead on the X. At 50 yards I ended up with a 5 shot group about 10 inches across. The group placed at the 4 o'clock position about 12 inches from the X. Not as good as I hoped but the full choke along with my aging eyes looking at a small brass bead of a sight is likely cause. So I have another 5 boxed of 16 gauge sluggers I dont need right now.

Found a huge sheet of cardboard on the plinking range with no holes in it. Then I realized I shot every last one of those #8s I had on clay targets. Brought the board home as I will use it next time to check the pattern, but after going 23/25 I think the pattern is just fine.

All and all probably the best $80 plus tax I have ever spent on a firearm. Thank goodness for police confiscations.

the only bad thing about single shot h&r/nef shotguns is that the supply will dry up and prices will rise with the factory closure. it used to be great good fun to walk into a pawnshop and walk out with a decent $80 max single that just needed a little tlc to be made right.
