Choosing Between these 3 Revolvers

Hello friends and neighbors // All three prices are fair. All three firearms are outstanding.

I'd go for the one that has been for sale the least amount of time and go back for the others. Unless one feels/balances/shoots better than the others.

Having a 6" 586 I'd probably go with the 19 if feel is a toss up.

Don't listen to me though I can barely say no to a well priced .357/.38.

I'd probably take the Model 19 of the choices you listed.
However, I'd take a Ruger SP-101 over any of those choices for an all around handgun. They are a little more packable for carry (not one of your current concerns, but you never know when it might become one) but still plenty shootable in the 3" version and SOLID. I loved my first so much I bought another! Admittedly, one is for sale now, but still those little guns have made an impression on me.
I also like the Ruger GP-100 better than the 686. I had a 686 once and while it was a good gun, I did shoot it enough to get it out of time. I've never accomplished that with any Ruger or even heard of it. I also shot another S&W out of time before and had the problem you describe on a third S&W with the cylinder being hard to open. It was the ejector rod unscrewing itself. Still, while I've liked the S&W's I've owned, I think Rugers are just a little more durable than S&W's in most respects.

For a home defense gun, I would go for the 4" barrel. Less flash, more velocity. It would also be a good plinking gun.

I assume they are all "pre lock" Smiths?

FWIW, I have 4" 686 and q 4" 19, a 2-1/2" Ruger Security Six. All nice guns.

Heh, I think I've been in that store and looked at those revolvers (on Thursday.) If I didn't have a 19 already I would have scooped up that one.

I have a 6" Model 19-4 that I bought new and it is one of the handguns I own that I would not consider getting rid of. To me, the 19 with a 4" barrel is one of the best looking handguns ever made.

I went with the 19

I picked up the 19 for $370. It's a pinned and recessed model 19-3. While cosmetically it's hardly in perfect condition it appears to me to be in excellent mechanical shape and is in my opinion a very sweet shooter. Interestingly, the left grip is sanded down to accommodate the use of a speed loader.

The target was set at 25 feet and represents my best group out of 50 rounds fired in DA...I don't consider myself a great shot but thought this was alright.

It's a shame somebody bubba'd the grips. They can easily be replaced.
It appears to have a target hammer and trigger.
Looks like that rascal shoots like a model 19.

That's some good shootin'.

I'm bettin' the more you shoot it, the more you'll like it and so will your grand kids.

Yes I know. The grips are not in good shape but I do like the way they feel. And yes it does have the target hammer and trigger. Thanks for the compliment on my shooting. I just wish I had found out about the Model 19 sooner.

CT, for shooting a gun that is new to you your results are sterling. Work on your double action pull where you find the "happy spot" for your finger on the trigger, hand grip and ability to concentrate on holding your sights picture during a nice smooth pull. You'll soon cut the group size down to less than half of your target.

And if that sanded spot on the grips are raw I'd suggest using a bit of paper towel to wipe on a couple or three coats of thinned down polyurethane varnish. Or even 4 or 5 rubbed on coats of danish oil or something along the same lines. It would be nice to protect it from gun oils, hand grime and so on.

And a hearty congrats on a superb choice. I've shot versions of all three guns you mentioned and my 19 is still my favourite due to the slightly smaller size and weight.

Thank you BCRider for your comments. I carried the 19 today for the first time, and it felt great on my hip. Good idea on the grips..I'll have to work on that.

You made the right choice my friend. And for your first time out with it in DA, that's mighty nice shooting. Fix up those grips a little bit, and I think you'll be good to go for a very long time with that Model 19. Enjoy, and thanks for sharing.
