My dad lives in Texas, and hunts deer and hogs in a raised blind. He's also one of those guys who has "everything," including a night vision scope for the hogs, and a generally pretty posh setup in his blind.

Can you guys think of a good Christmas gift I could give him? I don't know much about that style of hunting.

A Heater.

I use one of the small Coleman Catalytic Heaters and set it on the floor right between my legs when sitting in a box blind. Works much better than a coffee can, a roll of toliet paper, and rubbing alcohol :).

A Thermacell Bug Repeller. These are worth their weight in gold when it is too warm to use the heater :).

Just my .02,

Thanks Leon and Click. Both good ideas, but I know for a fact he already has both.

Swivel padded office chair, adhesive hooks for hanging things, hand towels to lay on the window openings which will protect the firearm ( I have these things in mine )

If he like a nice knife, you might look into getting him a custom made one. I got one of the Anza knifes, found here,Anza Knives for Christmas last year. It is a VERY nice made knife, and holds an edge something fierce. I have skinned three feral hogs, and two deer with it before hitting a steel with it this weekend for the first time.

I know there are other makers out there but this one came to mind since I just used it.

Or maybe a really nice pocket knife. It doesn't have to be used in the stand to be very well received and appreciated.

How about a green spotlight? My son is a guide, one of his clients gave him a high end green light. He has a video of a whitetail centered in the light and paying it no mind whatsoever.
That is if using a spotlight is legal for hogs where he is.

I spend several hours in the blind each week. However, my questions for the OP are these. Is it an open blind (exposed to weather) or a nice enclosed box? Does he hunt a LOT (say, every week), or just a few times per year?

As a person who is in the blind a lot, I really like the choices noted so far including the heater (works best in an enclosed blind), thermacell (enclosed or not), or a good chair (enclosed blind). Each of these things can make the hunting experience much more comfortable. A good office chair that is wide enough for the guy when wearing full winter gear would be good. It needs to pivot, tilt, and raise up and down. The pivot is for scanning. The raising to to customize to the stand for the proper shooting position. The tilting is purely for comfort and/or dozing.

Not stand-related, but really useful and touched on already is shooting sticks. Where I have longer treks to the stand, I carry shooting sticks for those times I get an encounter shot. A lot of my best hunts have been what has gone on outside of the stand on the way in or the way out. Probably the coolest sticks I have are Jim Shockey Tripod Trigger sticks. They are great to use! http://www.amazon.com/Primos-Shockey-Edition-Trigger-24-62-Inch/dp/B00BD5TC5U

When I used to hunting in a rasied blind in Texas, i always appreciated a heater. You just sit there and wait to ambush your prey and it gets cold pretty quick just sitting around.

Thanks Everyone

Double Naught: He just retired this summer. He built a beautiful enclosed blind right after retiring, and now he goes out there at least two or three times per week.

From the way he desribes it, it's a pretty complete setup. He's got a nice heater, Thermacell bug repeller, and nice office chair.

Phonejack, he likes things organized and he takes very good care of his stuff, so the adhesive hooks and towels are a great idea. Thank you.

41 Mag, I wanna get one of those knives for myself! I especially like this one: http://anzaknives.biz/store/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=24_25&products_id=128

ClickClick and Jmorris, the book/ebook idea is a good one. He told me he's been playing games on his phone in the blind. Books sound better.

I like the shooting stick idea Frankenstein, I think it's about a 20 minute walk to the blind. Might come in handy.

My favorite idea is the porta-potti. Well, maybe not exactly a porta-potti, but maybe some kind of "rocket box." Anything to make it possible to stay out in the blind longer. Plus, I'd be disinclined to do my business all around the blind. Unsanitary and probably alerts the animals to your presence. I'm leaning toward porta-john.

I've had to use ones like this at work.

http://www.amazon.com/Portable-Toil...d=1417531184&sr=1-10&keywords=portable+toilet

Using them was fine, but emptying them was BRUTAL. Plus, as Capcurt pointed out, do you really want to linger in a 4x8 box once you've done your business.

So new question: How do stand hunters handle the call of nature? Just climb down and walk a good distance away? Or it "Depends" on how serious and dedicated you are?

1. Ipod with books on tape, comedy routines, etc.

2. Sound amplifier (for when not using ipod). It's pretty tough to keep staring through your NV scope all night. This might let you know when the pigs come in.

3. Anti-hog trap, just for fun.

I was talking about one of those porta-potti;s that uses the chemical, that has water and is good for like 25 flushes. I used to have one quite a few years ago and I never detected any foul odors emitting from it. I was thinking to keep the area clear of any human waste that could be detected by game animals around the stand. Maybe my sniffer isn't the best in the west, or my other body parts can hold better than others, but I've never had any problem still hunting for hours in a makeshift stand.:uhoh:

Okay, Leon, how about this. A buddy of mine just installed a battery and solar charger in his blind so that he can keep his phone and tablet charged and running while in the blind for long periods. Just a thought. He has enough juice to run a fan in summertime (12v variety) as well to help keep him cool. Might help with the exhaust fan, too!

Very nice sounding setup your buddy has!
