Ever since I was a kid my dad, my younger brother and I would spend at least one day around this time of year small game hunting. Squirrel, rabbit, and quail were all open and a mixed bag was possible. I can't recall ever getting all 3 in the same day, but 2 out of 3 occasionally.

Part of the purpose was to harvest some mistletoe for decoration. It had been a tradition in my dad's home when he was young. We always hunted with shotguns and would shoot it out of a tree once located.

After my brother and I became teens, we would eat Christmas dinner mid-afternoon on Christmas Eve and open presents that night. We would always hunt that morning while mom would prepare the food. We wanted to work up a good appetite.

Dad has been gone 10 years come February and would turn 100 soon if he were still alive. He gave up hunting at about age 80 and it has been my job to get the mistletoe ever since. Today was that day.

Miss you dad. Wish you could have been there.

I’ve always wondered how people recognize mistletoe way up there and distinguish it from other vines. Good eyes, man.

That’s a nice tradition. I think I may try to incorporate this into my holidays as my family seems to lack much in the way of tradition and I would like to start changing that. Prehaps my once a year hunt with great grandfathers SxS 20ga would be the way to do it. Now to find some mistletoe….

I've never seen it in anything but hardwood trees. At this time of year it is the only green up there.

Just wondering if anyone else does this. A few years ago a man was arrested in one of the Atlanta area shopping malls for shooting mistletoe out of a tree in the parking lot. The poor guy didn't seem to understand that it was a problem. I'm pretty sure they didn't make a big deal out of since there was no harm done.
