I remember reading somewhere about chronographs. The search did not reveal anything particularly useful although it is probably out there.

I think I'm ready to take the reloading to the next step and purchase a chronograph. Lots of pistol rounds and some 223's

Don't really want to spend alot but not looking for one that will break on the second trip.

Any suggestions?

I have the Competition Electronics ProChrono Digital chronograph as well. I like it. Simple and effective.

They all break on the first trip if you shoot them.:neener:

Most of the cost is in the bells and whistles, most of which is not needed. An $80 chrono measures the same velocity as a $500 chrono, measurement accuracy is unknown unless you have some standard to compare it to. The less expensive ones require a pen or pencil and piece of paper to write down results, the more expensive have a laptop connection and program. I use low tech pen and paper to record data and let Excel on the PC crunch the numbers.
