Chrony is dead!

Well, it finally happened, but I still didn't get the honor.
Was letting a friend shoot his new HellCat and he made several shots just fine, I went inside to get some of my reloaded ammo for him to try and came back to this!
He was nearly dead on, just a bit low! Fortunately he is a straight up guy and paid me for it. Already replaced it and picked him up one of his own to shoot!
BTW, Bass Pro at the Pyramid only has one left if anyone needs it!
I'm sure my turn is coming, maybe I'll switch to Lab Radar when I kill this one

Probably, but it was missing a reading now and then and he said he tried to get closer to the sensors. He succeeded.

I always have that in the back of my mind when using mine. I try to set it where it works at the lowest it can be from the bullet travel. I have a friend who breaks every thing he touches. He don't know i own a chrono. He asked me to teach him how to reload. I told him buy all the equipment and i'll gladly teach him. He still don't know how to reload.

If you are concerned, you can always make a deflector shield out of plate steel and use app on your phone with included cable.

Then you can get closer to the "sky windows" for more accurate readings.

Needs to be angled down— you don’t want that shot coming straight back to you!

Like they say, there are 2 types of chronograph owners. the ones that shot their chrono and the ones that are going to shoot it.
I've shot over 200 rounds with mine and have't shot it yet. Although I know there will be a day I do.

Look into replacing the metal rods with wooden dowels for when one of them takes a hit. The unit will thank you and you will do much less damage to it that way.

That helps most of the time. When mine blew over I really didn't have any business being out shooting.

I hit my F1 with a .177 pellet gun 600 fps and it survived! Left a dent on the sensor casing. I put a steel plate to protect the sensor after the incident.

I won't be this kind, although I've been the first and second kind. I don't see the usefulness of trying to chrony loads in gusty or high winds. And I'm almost always prone with my chrony already on the ground ahead of me.

I use a heavy camera tripod. Most people don't want to spend several hundred dollars for a tripod for a chrono they only use occasionally. The weight on a lightweight tripod usually does the trick.

That's actually what I'm using, an old video camera tri-pod.

Don't know if you are aware, but if you send your (ahem) damaged crono to Caldwell, in the past they would replace the damaged components and only charge you for the parts (up to the value of a new one - at which point they will just ship you a new one). I have also been told some folks have gotten a discount off the new unit price for the usable parts from a wounded one.

Edit: just looked at the web page and can no longer find reference to that policy. Maybe call them?

Most of the ones I've hit have been at the end of the range, right in front of the target. Put it in a pup tent (dog shelter) for shade and light the inside so the sensors pick up the shot then get th records later. Really frustrating to shoot ten and have all erors.

I recently shot one of the shades while trying to NOT hit the main unit. I succeeded!

Like OP, I have an inexpensive Ballistic Precision. Chronies live a dangerous life.
