Musing over "classic" handguns of American make, made of steel and clothed in walnut... Colt Gov't, S&W Mdl 10, 19, 27, 29, 36, Colt 1903, Colt Python, Trooper, Official Police. Any others come to mind for you ?

Colt's Detective Special, Agent, Cobra, and Official Police come to mind as does the Gold Cup and Combat Commander/Commander models. Most every S&W J, K, L, and N frame revolvers and their Model 41 .22 Target pistol. Speaking of .22 Target pistols High Standard use to make a pretty outstanding .22 with their Supermatic Citation, Trophy, and Victor models.

Of course Ruger's Single Six, Blackhawk, and Redhawk have all been mentioned already but I would put their Six series (Security, Service, and Speed Six), up for Classic consideration as they were ahead of their time with their modular, solid frame design and investment cast frame construction.

I'd include the early Dan Wesson revolvers, but I would like to see the S&W model 39 on the list. The 39 gave us 45 years of S&W semi autos that sold a ton and were a common sight on the hips of law enforcement back in the 80s and 90s.

Savage 1905 and 1907 (if I recall correctly), Stevens Single shots, Iver Johnson , Harrington Richardson.

I have a few that could be considered "classics" for sure: GI Rem-Rand 1911A1, GI Colt 1911, GI S&W 1917 and GI Colt 1917, 1963 Colt 38 Super, Series 70 gold cup, S&W GI victory 38, python, S&W 19, Ruger standard model. For the most part, all "safe queens". I generally use my Glocks and the occasional 1911 (SA or Kimber) and CCW a shield 9.

Good call!

I thought about mentioning the Model 39 as it was a real break through in terms of being the forerunner for S&W DA/SA semi-autos for both the civilian market and for law enforcement.

I was asking for y'all's input, knowing full well that I would forget a multitude.

Yeppers, you kicked over a hornets nest  For many of the answers, I had not considered...the S&W 39...the advent of the wonder nines, made me think of the Browning HP...

So many answers out there, thank you for starting the thread...
