Heh. Yes. It's your property.

You may not want people to know that you have firearms for theft reasons, depending on where you live.

I'd do it in the back yard if you want to do it outside.

Well the problem is it's freaking hot in the garage, and our backyard is a golf course. Nobody can really see though, I'll do it back there.

On the driveway... That would make for a highly effective scrubbing tool.
I turn on the exhaust fan & do it in the kitchen sink when shes not home.
I use old newspapers to catch the junk from going down the drain.
Clean up my mess and nobody smells a thing.

I didn't want to clean it in the house because last time I did my room stank for the next day. Also mom's not too happy when I do that :) Also, it was a fairly nice day out and I wanted to get some sun after being cooped up. None of the golfers noticed.

hell yeah, clean the whole arsenal in the driveway... make sure you test fire each one once its cleaned too... make the neighbors really nervous :-D

in all seriousness, i would consider a location that was a tad bit more concealed than out in plain view

You might want to disassemble it in your home, put the parts in one small box, and take it out back that way. Call that box your "to do" box. Take another small box with you as your "done did it" box. After you clean each part from the "to do" box put it in the "done did it" box. When you've finished take both boxes back inside and reassemble the gun.

That way prying eyes outdoors won't see the whole thing at once. It's a kind of camouflage: people tend to recognize familiar shapes but not their components. I don't believe in upsetting people.

Most people don't pay attention anyhow nor would they probably recognize what you were doing unless they were pretty close. Don't wave it around like some sort of moron and it won't look any different than me cleaning auto parts outside to avoid the kerosene stink in my garage.

This is kinda silly. There is no need to make a stink when cleaning your guns. Go get one of the new and very effective water based gun and bore cleaners available where gun supplies are sold.

I used to live in a small apartment in a four-plex. Had carpets throughout, and no real good place to clean my guns. But, I did have a nice porch.

I knew my other three neighbors very well, and two of the three would often go shooting with me.

So, I cleaned on the porch without issue for the two or three years that I lived there.

(It is ssooooo much nicer to have a house with a shop area now!!!)

NEVER...EVER...de-cosmoline a milsurp over the kitchen sink with mineral spirits!!! I thought that, mixed with Hoppe's and Rem-Oil, smelled pretty good around 2am when I finished, but 3 days later I got kinda tired of the smell. Took SEVERAL cleanings of the kitchen to make the house smell like a house again.

I'd disassemble it first. You sound young, waving a pistol around in your driveway getting ready to clean it might raise a few eyebrows.

i clean mine at the rear of my van, in driveway.. i then use the compressed air to blow parts clean and then dry. i hold long rifles tight against my body till i get there. or use a big towel for a little cover, i know ive been seen by my neighbors anyway. open the doors and spray away. its my driveway my truck!!!!
no stinky mess to clean up in the house.

I know california has the worst gun laws, but don't assume everyone from there is anti gun. I'm from CA and I'm not. Admittedly, the only reason I had a change of heart is because when I was 17 my grandma was mugged in front of me and there wasn't a damn thing I could do about it. guess it takes a rude awakening to see the light sometimes.

I prefer to clean outside the house when using strong smelling solvents and cleaners. I prefer the discrete cleaning areas; I will clean in the garage or backyard mostly out of public view. Or out my side door where my neighbor sometimes cleans his guns outside his side door.

While it may be legal to clean firearms in pubic view, I prefer something a bit more discrete.

One time I was degreasing my M1A in my front yard. I did not have the stock for it though.

My lawn service guy came up and asked about it. He thought the gun was pretty cool.

I probably wouldn't do it again, but this was in a rural neighborhood in the safest state in the US.

There are so many ways that could be taken badly out of context. :neener:
