I recently purchased an IAB 1863 Sharps percussion rifle in .54. I have read both good and bad reports on IAB rifles, but this one looks to be one of the good ones. Wood to metal finish is great and the internals look to have been done right. My questions is how do you go about cleaning it after shooting?
The instructions are vague. Call for removing the gas check plate, this looks like it shouldn't be a problem. But what about the sealing sleeve in the breech? How do you remove it for cleaning.

With tools

is how, they make a special tool to remove the sleeve . Here is Dixe Gun works tool, put on end of your Rod and tap .
Sharps Percussion sleeve remover $14.00ish .

For cleaning I would use Ballsitrol , no water , but thats just me .

I had an IAB 63 carbine. I could never get the sleeve out even w/ that tool. Some say the IAB is a fixed sleeve some say not. as long as you do not have a gas leak I would not bother w/ it. I did the gas check O-ring conversion. In the process they needed to remove the sleeve build and press in a new fixed SS sleeve. I also had a Armi Sport. 59. It had a fixed sleeve I had Bobby Hoyt pull the fix sleeve and make a 2 pcs male female SS sleeve w/ the O-ring conversion. I now own and shoot a SHILOH.

sharps59, wass yours a Bredan or carbine? My A.S. carbine had a removable sleeve and came out easily after each shooting at the range or field. The b--ch was the flash channel screw! I ended up lubing it with breech grease to keep it functional.

I don't believe the IAB sleeve comes out unless you remove the barrel... I'll re a firm that when I email a friend.

SLTM1 the Armi Sport is the only one I know for sure the chamber sleeve can be easily removed for disassy. and cleanin' ... We both have/had Armi Sports .54 papercutters...

iab sharps

The O-ring deal Mr Hoyt does involves removing the barrel and the sleeve.

He remakes the sleeve into two pieces joined by an O-ring.

This allows you to remove the sleeve for cleaning and ocaisional ring replacement..
Otherwise it doesn't come all the way out.
Wierd design.
I have a Pedersoli whch I plan to do this with.

If Bobby Dose not have the time to get it back quickly. Check w. Charlie Hahn I beleave he also dose the design Bobby uses.

I beleave the brass cartridges for the 63 are for guns designed to take that cart. I would go w/ charlie Hahns tubes before a brass. cart. in a 63. If I wanted to shot brass i would go for a center fire cart. sharps.
