Cleaning & lubing powder measure

I just bought a new Hornady powder measure, and it mentions to clean it before use and also spray with dry lube. Can anyone recommend what to use?

Also, I was going to use brake cleaner to clean some new dies and wonder if that is ok, and if they need any other care (rust protection)?
I live in Alberta, so it is pretty dry here anyway

I would coat lightly with your favorite oil after cleaning and thoroughly wipe off the excess. Despite the low humidity.

It is a good idea to clean and lube new dies.

Oh yea. I like Sentry's Tuff-Glide for powder measures. It works far better than graphite.

Brake cleaner works like a champ to clean dies. As stated before, put some kind of lube/oil on them after to keep them from rusting, since the brake cleaner will leave them "dry". I picked up some old dies at an estate sale and used brake cleaner on them since they were coated with old bullet lube, etc. Really did the trick.

Remington makes a dry lube in a spray can, but I'm not sure if it would work with your powder thrower. I use it on my .45 wad gun when we shoot Bullseye in the winter months outdoors.

Regular rifle cleaning solvent will do for your dies. Powdered graphite will do nicely for the powder measure. Crappy Tire should have a spray dry lube. In the automotive department, I think.

Thanks for the replies. I think I will head over to Canadian Tire and pick up some spray dry lube. Is there a particular one that you can recommend Sunray? I wonder if it would affect the powder in any way?

When I received my LNL the powder measure was saturated with oil.

I completely dissassembled it and cleaned it with blue wonder, and then rinsed it in hot water. I then dropped all the metal parts in a pan of boiling water for a couple minutes and drained and dried the hot parts on a towel, turning them with tongs, so as not to burn my fingers.

Once that was done, I sprayed them with remingtion teflon dry lube very lightly and wiped away any excess.

You realliy need to clean it well to get all the oil off, even the oil in he crevices and screw holes.

Any oil on a powder measure is very bad news, because it will affect the charge, and will cause squibbs, and very inconsistant loads.

With my hornady LNL, I cleaned out the powder measure with brake cleaner, blew it dry with compressed air, and then used some Hornady one-shot case lube which is a dry lube. The dies and press itself also got the same treatment.

My Hornady purchase three months ago was also soaked with oil for storage, I thought I cleaned it well but I ended up with some nasty variations in the charge. I like the idea of boiling it out and then using dry lube – weekend project.

Lightly lube, work measure twice, let dry overnight. Works far better than anything else I have tried.
