In all my time i never really paid attention to cleaning instructions on any cleaners. I ended up buying some bore cleaner made by remington the other day and actually read the back of the package. The package said use a brush (which I always have) but the directions also claimed to use a patch over the bore brush. I have never used a patch over any brush in any rifle or shotgun I own. Is it really necessary? I'm pretty sure my bore on my pistol is 4140 steel and if I remember the bore brushes are made of phosphor bronze.....a much softer material. Will a bore brush thats metal on metal cause damage? I would think that with the bronze being the softer material that only the bronze would be affected. Thanks in advance....

I use bore-brush when I break-in a new barrel. Afterward, I use either jag with patch, or patch over a worn out bore-brush.

It was something my dad tought me. I'm not sure why, but I think the patch with bore give good contact and the patch retain more solvent for cleaning out the bore.
