I have been told different things about lubrication/cleanup that concern WD40. While i usually try to use a dedicated gun oil, i have used the WD40 on occasion without any noticeable ill effects. However, i have also been told that WD40 is about 85% kerosene and, as such, is more a solvent than a lubricant, so is therefore better for cleaning rather than lubricating, or something like that. Anyone out there that has heard the same thing, or have the straight scoop on this and care to share it?

WD-40 is a protectant (against water) not a lube/cleaner. It will turn to a varnish-like coating in time.

I acquired an M1 Carbine that was "protected" with WD-40 before being put into storage. It took me a week to clean off the gunk. I can't complain too much - it was free.

I won't let WD-40 near any of my guns.

I use WD-40 in my lead moulds. It leaves a sticky varnish once it dries. Its fine for those, I take break cleaner to clean it off with and get them ready for use.

Its not for gun use, though.

WD stands for water-displacement...

40 stands for the IQ of anyone that thinks kerosene is a lubricant.:D

I figured there was probably more to the story that what i had heard up till now, although i wasn't at all sure about the % of kerosene part. Sounds like it would be a good thing to leave in the shed with the yard tools and keep away from the gunlocker.
