I carry Federal tactical bonded 230 gr +p in my P220 because thats what I was issued. If my P220 didn't feed them reliably I would carry a different gun.
I could really give a rats ass about what Clint Smith loads his 45 with. I used to use 230 gr ball too. But that was 27 years ago in a Colt Light weight Commander when the only real autos for police work were the 1911, browning HP, and S&W 39 and 59. they were designed to work with FMJ. A lot has changed in that time. Now pistols are designed to feed hollow points they have better sights etc.,
If Clint is comfortable carrying FMJ more power to him. There are ample studies that show a FMJ 45 is no better than a FMJ 9mm when it come to incapacitaion.
Mr. Smith is a teacher and apparently a pretty good one (or he's blown a lot of smoke up a lot of peoples butts) but the bottom line is he's not out on the road day in day out.
Carry what you are comfortable with or if you're like me, you have to carry what you are issued. As far as I'm concerned, a hollow point may not expand, but as long as it works reliably, it will be as good or better than FMJ which will never expand.
