1. It was a 10 gallon container of solvent
2. You don't shoot much
3. You rarely clean your guns

Which one is it?

I used to shoot a lot then for about 12 years I worked all over the state averaging 90 hour work weeks. Didn't leave much Free time for things in life.

I try to shoot 2-4 times a month depending on what I have going on and weather. I don't necessarily clean everything every time depending on what I shoot and how much of it. Generally clean things deeply about once a month.

No. In the first half dozen posts back on page one, two or three people post their favorite CLP products that are not Breakfree.

Context will mater for what CLP means. Go to a carbine or 2/3-gun match and ask everyone to show you their bottle of CLP and 9 out of 10 people (if not a higher ratio) will show you a bottle of Break-Free. Find a different sub-population of gun owners (SASS, Benchrest etc) and the results will be different. When the thread started I assumed CLP meant Break-Free and never though of any other product as "CLP". I even went back and edit that post a few days ago to clarify that CLP meant Break-Free CLP to me personally.

CLP is a category, but the image in many of our minds is the Breakfree product. We've established that they are not best at anything but are substantially better than nothing, and generally won't harm anything. Since we will never agree on the best lubricant, protectant and solvent, just use whatever is at hand thoughtfully. The only thing to avoid is products that don't coexist gracefully with other products (e.g. Froglube).

I've tried other stuff, but Break Free CLP is what I've used since almost day one, in July of '77. Never a rust or lube issue.

That was 4 and half years before I was around. Pretty good memory you must be like rainman. :)

It's easy to remember your 21st birthday, when I bought my awful Taurus 83. I bought the Break free about a day later, with a bunch of other stuff, and was already regretting the purchase of the Taurus, which was recommended by an ex-NYPD officer who was a family friend. I didn't ask him for any further advice on guns.

In most ways, I don't remember dates well at all, but I have a photographic memory for faces. I can sit and watch TV and just rattle off the names of all the actors almost as fast as they appear. The negative thing about it is I see someone, and I know I've met them before, and it drives me crazy trying to remember when I met them. I'm correct about 99.9% of the time. As I get older it doesn't come to me as quickly as it used to. My all time record is 42 years after I almost died from a blown appendix, I remembered my then 14 year old roommate when I saw him at the grocery store one morning. We got along in 2010, but we hated each other in 1968.

Never use the stuff. I like Hoppe's and Rem products. But honestly, I think how you use what you use makes a bigger difference than just what. You could probably use kerosene, vaseline and baby oil and your gun would run fine and stay rust free. (though it would SMELL kinda funny).

Back in the early to mid 70s WD-40 was all the rage. Used it on everything from firearms to farm implements. Never had a gun malfunction from using it. Can’t say it ever killed a tractor either. Used hoppes #9 then too. Still use the hoppes although I mix in a little kroil with it. Have some Butches Bore Shine, Sweets 7.62 and MPro7 on the bench also. Use those when I feel the need. Use aviation grease, lithium grease And other various gun greases also. Have tried many things and now have quite the stash to use up before I die. Although now I don’t use WD anymore except at work cause that’s what they provide. Will take Breakfree to the feild with me In my bag cause it’s convenient. Still have some of the older stuff with Teflon in it. Then use the purpose made products when I get home. Like other ppl have mentioned its more how you use it that’s important. Within reason. I don’t use water and dish soap on my firearms. But hey if it works for you then that’s great. Lol

If it was a perfect world, my gun cleaner and lube, along with my shampoo, would have no smell. One of the things that really has annoyed me over the years is when they either quit making a tolerable smelling shampoo, or they mess with the formula and make it reek of flowers/perfume. The one I use right now is really cheap, and I can tolerate the smell ir has, but they recently increased the potency of the smell, with a "Now 24 hour scent!" on the label. I guess they think people want to smell their hair for 24 hours..why? Looks like when the current 3 bottles are gone, I'll be looking for a new one.The unscented ones always cost way more than the scented ones. I can't understand how or why...
