It looks like the CMP have run out of Greek FG Garands. The only thing left are rack grades. I noticed that they have service grade barreled receivers for $300.

Does anyone have any advice/opinions on on how much it would cost or how much work would be involved in making a complete rifle with these barreld receivers? It doesn't state in their description whether the unit has the correct headspace, but if it does, I would think you could make a complete rifle without help from a gunsmith.

From my limited knowledge, I think you would need a bolt, trigger group, op-rod, gas system, stock set and all kinds of pins and springs. Does this sound like a feasible?

Thanks for your imputs.

Buy a rack grade for $395. Get a service grade barrelled receiver for $300. Swap the parts. Make sure bolt headspaces fine. Sell or keep the rack grade barrelled receiver. You can either buy the headspace gauges or have a smith check it for you.

I was thinking of maybe picking up one of the refinished receivers (without barrel) and eventually having a rifle built around it in .308. Should I be concerned about a shortage of available parts in the future?

No worries about parts for right now.
Just go to E-Bay and do a search, m1 garand.

Some things like operating rods, bolts and complete trigger groups are beginning to get pricey but the small stuff is still around in good numbers.

Orion7 Enterprises http://www.m1garandrifle.com
and
Bill Ricca http://www.billricca.com

Both can set you up with most parts and I will vouch for high quality stuff from these folks though Bill ships quicker than Tony, Tony has a greater variety of items available for sale at any one time.

I don't personally think your going to find a parts shortage in your lifetime. The CMP still has OVER 20,000 Garands in crates to go thru. Orest @ the CMP has stated that 9 out of 10 rifles are no good to sell as a functioning rifles (bad barrels & headspace issues) and they are being parted out. When will the CMP starts releasing these parts? Knowbody knows. Currently they are saving all the parts to use on rifles they still have. Some members are suggesting that the CMP starts a sales program for a "parts kit minus barrel" and let us find our own 'smith to build them for us. What there is a shortage of is the complete functioning and in good condition Garands coming from the CMP. But you can bet, as time goes by, those guys that have bought 12 a year and still have them all, will be hitting the market one day. I have read of some collectors on CSP that have 100+ Garands still in the CMP boxes, stashed in the attics, under beds, behind couches, etc.. even with the cosmoline still on the rifles.
