I'm [pinching trigger finger & thumb together] this close to placing an order for a Garand. The wife got a new computer; I politely compared a Garand's cost to a Dell and BINGO I got permission to order a Garand, also. Have to wait for my TSRA card & CHL license to show up so I meat the qualifications.

Before I order, I emailed CMP to see how the supply is holding up. I know orders are 120 days+ behind. I wanted to know if it looks like an order placed in the next couple weeks will probably be filled, might be filled, might not be filled, or "don't even waste the stamp" chance. I emailed them last week but haven't heard an answer. I knwo they are VERY busy filling everyone else's order and I hate pulling a clerk off an order to answer this question, so...

Anyone have good information on how the supply of Garands is holding out?

I just checked the website...not looking good...only SA service grades are left $ 595, SA field grade at $495 and Winchester field grade at $695. http://www.thecmp.org/m1garand.htm

I'm betting I missed the boat on this, didn't I?

The general sense is whatever is listed on the website will be available if you send you order now. They keep removing various grades as they feel they won't be able to fill them.

They are making educated guesses though since they have a month's worth of orders they haven't opened and they are filling orders from several months ago right now. They have to project what they will have six months from now.

If you want a like new correct rifle good luck. If you want a service grade get in line, you'll have to wait but you'll probably get it. If you want a beat up rifle for a project gun you are in luck.

One thing to keep in mind is if you're willing to take a trip you can drive to one of their stores and pick one off the shelf.

Check the forums on odcmp.org for more info. People post reports on what's available at each store every few days.

I just got a special grade from the north store and I love it.

Don't tell the wife but the rifle itself is just the beginning. You'll start tinkering and finding accessories you "need" to have.

Good luck.

Wow. I had no idea the situation was this desperate. I was looking at the CMP sales page only about a month ago and that big green notice wasn't there. It looks to be more fallout from the election seeing as how "SINCE OCTOBER 2008, WE HAVE BEEN OVERWHELMED WITH ORDERS FOR ALL PRODUCTS, ESPECIALLY RIFLES AND AMMUNITION."

Its looking like that trip to the CMP North store I planned for later in the summer was more timely than I thought.

You didn't miss the boat... but you should send in your order ASAP, if only to get the ball rolling sooner. I hemmed and hawed for 10 years before I sent my first order in. Could have gotten some great deals. Plus you need to budget for future purchases. One garand is just the beginning.... ;)

I placed an order for a correct grade HRA Garand, which they received on March 16. I am still waiting. I was told that they might be able to deliver by mid September.

Somebody posted that the north store is well stocked except no service grades. It's a zoo because of the national matches.

My brother went a few weeks ago to get our rifles and had the place to himself more or
less.

It will be interesting to see what the situation is after the summer. The obamamania should have worn off, the national match crowd will have taken their share, maybe the cmp will have caught up on orders somewhat, and maybe the last of the surplus 30-06 ammo will be gone?

If the economy still stinks and the surplus ammo is gone I'll bet you'll find people selling off the garands they bought. The used market will be there long after the cmp runs out.

Who knows?

Well, I did the unthinkable and I called. Glad I did.

A very nice woman answered the phone (obviously, I got the southern store - that Alabama accent made me smile and made me slap on the Texan just a little thicker) and said, in short, they have plenty of rifles in the lower grades. The website shows what is available to be shipped. Basically, its what the armorers have inspected & processed. That's the backlog - those folks are working as hard as they can, but with orders in the dozens of dozens a day, they can't catch up. There are more rifles, but - obviously - the sooner an order is placed the better it will be.

If the CMP has it on the website and accepts the order, chances are very good you'll get it.

Quoheleth:

Some say the long wait is part of the mystique, but I chose to drive to the North store from STL. I see you have a little longer drive, but you may want to consider it. The staff will help you pick a good one. Downside is that lately service grades have not been available for in-store purchase. There are, however, some gems hidden in the field grade racks.

Either way, good luck on your purchase. You will not regret it. Even if you do mail order, it might be to your advantage to start ordering some ammo. I order a span can every payday. Should start coming in in September.

Been waiting on a SG HRA since mid march. I've gotten the ammo that I ordered along with it but no rifle. Although take into consideration that I asked the CMP for a "good shooter" and I didn't care for matching numbers or historical value. I suspect that is what is taking so long. So in the meantime I'll just keep practicing with my .22

No, I doubt that your request has delayed it - they pay lip service to such requests generally responding to them only if there happens to be one that meets a request at the time the order is filled. Tells you right in the website that they can't fill requests.

A service grade HRA rifle will be a good shooter by virtue of the condition of it's muzzle and chamber throat as spec'd for that grade.

They're just slowed by so many orders is all.

i made the trip from texas and im so glad i did.

we got 2 virtually prestine springfield garands, service grades. a bud just drove to the same store (south) and they didnt have a single service grade springfield so he got field grades, and they actually are very nice also.

do it now, and dont wait!!!!!!!

if at all possible make the trip. its a pain but once its done, thats it, its done.

I think I've complimented your rifle Brian, but I'll say it again: that's one fine Garand. Like I said I've been planning a trip to the North Store and I hope I can find one that looks that good...a little disappointed there are no service grades available to pick out yourself.

thanks d!!!

i cant be sure of what the north store has on the racks, or the south store either for that matter now, i just know the south store didnt have any service grade springfields out last wednesday.

one encouraging thought though, before we went back in march i had recieved a south store report saying that the only service grades available in-store were h&r (which are nice too, i just had my heart set on a springfield). upon arriving, we walked in to find literally dozens on service grade springfields, so you just never know what you will find there. like others may have said, im not so sure even the staff knows what they are going to have on the racks a month from now. i think they open crates of rifles, and then they go through them one at a time, and assign them a grade.

by the way, i just refinished the birch stock on mine and will be doing a thread on it soon.

the deal with the service grades is that there are only selling service grades via ordering, they are way behind on service grades especially and i guess its their way to even out the playing field with collectors who can't make it to the stores to pick them out.

Just to get everyone motivated to order a SG, here is one I ordered in Feb. and just received in early July.

Nice IMG tags

Glad to see the unissed SG has made it into this thread too....:neener:

Enjoy that Garand. It sure is pretty. My understanding is that current lead times are longer.

LATEST CMP SALES NEWS:

SOLD OUT - 415-CN. As a result over 9,000 orders already in estore and the many hundreds of other orders (received through the mail and via phone) that have not yet been entered into our system, and the number of orders estimated to already be in the mail coming our way, we have posted item 415-CN as sold out and removed it from the Estore. M2 Ball, HXP, 240 rounds in 20 round cartons, in spam cans. We will be able to fill all orders already received and in the pipeline.

30-06 M2 BALL PURCHASE LIMITS ESTABLISHED. Effective immediately, CMP is setting a purchase limit for items 407-CAN (.30-06 M2 Ball, HXP, clipped, in spam cans) and 407DCAN (.30-06 M2 Ball, clipped, in .30 cal ammo can). The new purchase limit is total of 10 cans of HXP ammo per year, per customer, regardless of item numbers ordered.

ORDER BACKLOG. For the past six months, the number of orders received by CMP for rifles, ammunition, and all other products has been unprecedented. As of today, 10 April 2009, our Sales Order Processing Dept is up to processing / shipping orders received at the end of Jan 2009, with several thousand orders still to go for Feb and Mar. Because of the large volume of orders that we continue to receive daily in the mail and through the estore, customers should not expect any acknowledgment of our receiving orders for
30-45 days after mailing the order, and should not expect delivery for 90-120 days from placing an order. We ask our customers to bear with us. We will eventually recover from this surge. The CMP staff thanks you for your support and patience.

COMMUNICATION RESPONSE DELAYS. CMP is receiving hundreds of calls a day, as well as hundreds of emails. Each morning there are dozens of voicemails from the night before. Because of the large volume of constant calls in the daytime, it may take a few days for response. We have a state of the art phone system for a company our size, but the volume of calls is causing the system to do unexpected things. We apologize for any delay in responding to emails or telephone calls.

Thank you for your support of the CMP in these historic times.

407DCAN (.30-06 M2 Ball, clipped, in .30 cal ammo can) no longer listed for sale at CMP. They are still taking orders for spam cans.

FlyinBryan: How long ago did you find service grade SA's on the racks in the South Store? I was there three weeks ago and it was FG's only (though there were SA's & HR's).

I got a SA recommended by an employee testing the muzzles for me; it's not much to look at but that was no concern to me, the gas tube is a little loose and I didn't know you could have an amorer look 'em over before purchase. I'll admit I wouldn't have thought they'd put 'em on the racks needing work but it doesn't like much of a chore and I need to clean the gas tube anyway. Had some big fun shooting plastic mustard & mayo bottles last week. Is it still plinkin' if your shooter goes BOOM! ?

North store was out of Service Grades before April...but the latest news I heard is that the North store is hopeful of catching up with Service Grade orders in Oct.....so MAYBE, they will be available by fall or early winter in the stores...fingers crossed...I just rather see what I'm buying, so I'm waiting.

question on CMP order

Quick question...by the time I get home from work, FEDEX usually has come & gone through our neighborhood. But, they come by work during the day when I'm there. Can I have a CMP order shipped to my place of business (no problem with it on my end) if I put it as the shipping info?

Q

edit: I forgot that there is an email address for CMP. I emailed this question to them. When I hear from them, I'll post the answer here.
