CMP Garands - how's the supply?

One thing to keep in mind is if you're willing to take a trip you can drive to one of their stores and pick one off the shelf.

So let me get this straight. I can either wait months for an order to come in, or I can just drive 3 or so hours to the AL store and pick one up?

Would I be better of to wait a while, thinking they might have more selection in a year or so?

Do I also get to pick one OUT or do they just give you one depending on which grade you want?

I'm starting to think it would just be dumb for me to order. I just started looking seriously into buying one a couple weeks ago, and just fully convinced myself to go ahead and get one a few days ago.

I have one other gun I was going to buy first so it was looking like early next year before I could scrape up the spare change, but I could push it up on my list and maybe be able to swing it October-ish.

I've had all of my CMP purchases delivered to my office, which is in a different state from my residence. You can specify the delivery address on the order blank and it does not have to be the address on your driver's license or other ID.

DeepSouth...if you go to the store, you pick anyone you want! If you need help, ask, an they'll help you pick one out...Like..you want a good shooter, or you would like one if possiable from WWII...however they will probably only have Field grades too choose from.
You can walk out with your rifle an ammo, which is alot nicer than waiting...

Col Plink: "I got a SA recommended by an employee testing the muzzles for me; it's not much to look at but that was no concern to me, the gas tube is a little loose and I didn't know you could have an amorer look 'em over before purchase. I'll admit I wouldn't have thought they'd put 'em on the racks needing work but it doesn't like much of a chore

The gas tube wiggling a little is not an indication of a rifle needing work as far as the services or the CMP (who check them according to military service standards) is concerned.

Tightening the gas tube is a match/accuracy trick or refinement that is not needed unless there are EXTREME loose tolerances in the fit to the cuts in the barrel. Service requirements in general call for rifles to shoot 4 moa to be acceptable when new and to do that a somewhat loose fit of that tube will not have adverse effect. In fact, the services would WANT it to be easily removable for cleaning if needed by troopers in the field.

Here's a couple pics of the South store where you can pick out the rifle you want. I drove about 5 hours to get there and it was well worth it. No Service grades M1's right now. Only field grade Garands right now but there are some sweet ones in the bunch. Plenty of carbines to chose from as well.

It depends on the proof of eligibility that you use. I used my C&R license and that has to be delivered to the address listed on the license.

No, I doubt that your request has delayed it - they pay lip service to such requests generally responding to them only if there happens to be one that meets a request at the time the order is filled. Tells you right in the website that they can't fill requests.

Well I sent the letter in asking them for either a SA or HRA, whichever would fit the description of a good shooter. I was told by some other people who have gotten CMP rifles that if you ask nicely they will accommodate your request the best they can. But of course that advice came from before the ZOMG BUY GUNS panic. I'm not upset about my wait, I told them to take their time + the ZOMG BUY GUNS! equals a longer wait.

I'm busy working on building a 9mm AR15 and a regular AR15 so the M1 will come as a nice surprise in the mail whenever they get around to sending it out.

Quoheleth, not a direct answer to your question. Last Oct. I was hunting when a H&R correct grade showed up. The Fed-X guy called my office to find out where I was at and one of the staff she she would come to my house to sign for it. The Fed-X guy said forget it and dropped it off at the office instead. Sometimes it's nice to live in a small town. The H&R exceeded what I expected it to be. Good shooter.

My understanding is CMP will ship to you at an address other than your residence. the easiest way to check is email them at customer service.

well... I frequent a shop that puts out 50 to 75 of the CMP select grade rifles at a time.. actually boxed some up today... the supply is remaining constant.... they have plenty currently...though they still need to be blasted, parked, and reassembled before they can be shipped.

Official answer re. delivery address

Emailed CMP last week, after asking the question here. I got my answer back from a CMP customer service rep. Yes, they will send it to a business -- if it is listed on the paperwork as the delivery address.

Re: Fed-Ex...Ya know, I can tell you within 45 minutes of when he'll be at my church. It will literally be any time of the day for delivery at the house, from 10am (earliest we've had) to 5:45pm (latest we've ever had). I'm expecting an air compressor in the next two days at the house...we'll see what time he arrives.

If anyone is worried about waiting for a CMP rifle, I was at the Hammond Cabela's store yesterday. They had a rack of Garands and half a rack of 03's. A mere $1,200 will get you a Springfield M1 or 1300 for a Winchester. The 03's were running between $900 and 1100. All seemed to be in rack/field grade.

I got a nice M1 from a gunsmith for $600 at a gun show. Very nice condition and rebuilt from Springfield parts. A very good and accurate shooter.

I shopped the market and shows for a few months to find it but sounds like you have more of a wait for an order for a sight unseen rifle.

BTW, Garand folks, I did replace the main spring with a new one from WOLFF rated 2 pounds over stock. Works very well and I no longer get brass thrown all over. I am beginning to think this is a good step for any used auto.

I had very good luck ordering a rifle sight unseen from CMP. Here is my SA SG. It was worth the six months wait.

dang, every time I see that stock I get jealous.

Thanks, I'll never buy a lottery ticket............I figure I used up all my luck getting that as a service grade from CMP.
