Yes, CMP can ship a M1 to your door, even in CA. Ten day waiting period? It's usually longer than that for a CMP rifle :(

Regards

The CMP, by an act of Congress, is considered to be the same as an FFL for purposes of selling and shipping a rifle. They just happen to only sell military surplus rilfes.

Once you have the paperwork in place and mailed, the agonizing wait begins..... Then the FedEx truck shows up in your driveway and the doorbell rings. :D

And buy ammo at the same time. The e-store sells 960 round cases of Lake City Arsenal USGI M2 ball ammo for around $230 delivered to your door and is worth every penny!!

Yes got two of them a week ago, right to your door, I also live in Southern Cal.

Sonoma County here.....took less than a month for my Springfield Armory, Service Grade to arrive right to my door.

Danish or Greek?

Are they sold out of the Danish with the VAR barrels?
The Danish rack grade doesn't specify VAR. Anyone get a Greek M1 yet?
Thanks for any info.

Failure

These things are true.
The CMP will deliver a rifle straight to your door. Whether you'll be there when the delivery company knocks is another consideration.
When you do finally take posssession of your Garand, it's entirely possible the bore will be as innocent of rifling as a baby's rectum.
When you've returned your rifle to Orest, and he's politely sent you a better, you'll still have to deal with buying expensive ammunition, and aiming it through a hole.
Enthusiasts will tell you, "Your eye will naturally center the aim." You'll be callow and believe them.
The actuality is something different. You can swing and sway like Danny Kaye, still keep the tip of the front sight in the center of the reticule, and still hit nothing. You'll soon thereafter wish for regular leaf and post sights.
But IT'S AN IMPORTANT RIFLE.
You're right. I cherish the troops who fought so hard, who "loved... laid down...."
I admire them for their bravery going into combat with a weapon that couldn't actually be aimed.

I just got a Garand from the CMP last April. It's a pre-WWII Springfield (April '41) that had been sent to the Denmark. It has a VAR Barrel but the rest is a mixmaster of SA parts.

I had not shot a high-powered rifle or a military rifle for almost 30 years and the first range outing using Korean milsurp ammo I was able to get 6" groups at 100 yards with it after setting a 100yd battle zero.

To me, sight picture is everything with iron peep sights. I use a 6 o'clock sight picture and keep the top of the front blade centered in the rear peep sight.

From what I hve read on the CMP Fourm and sites like www.battlerifles.com most everyone is very happy with the M1's that they get. There are lots of storriea about the CMP bending over backwards to help out their customers with any problems that crop up. Parts are sent out for free if something is wrong and they will even exchange one rifle for another if something is really wrong.

30-06 ammo is pricey if you shop locally but the 960-round case from the CMP delivered to your door for $230 is a really good deal and it's excellent ammo.

I've got no problem with peep sights. In fact, I consider them superior to all other types of iron sights. Sometimes I prefer them even to reflex sights or scopes. If they were truly that bad, then the US Military would've dropped them long ago. 1917 Enfield, Springfield 1903A3, M1 Garand, M1 Carbine, M2 Carbine, M-14 (all variants as well), M-16, M-16A1, A2, A3, and A4. Let's not forget the M-4 Carbine. Foreign rifles use them as well: FAL, FNC, G-3, CETME, G-36C, Enfield No.4 MkIII, FR-8. Countless commerical rifles have peep sights as well. Learn to use the peep sights- they're really great once you get the hang of them. Fast and accurate.

I'm a bit surprised about the accuracy thing. First time I've heard that, but there are things I don't know. FWIW, my first outing with my Tanker .308 from Survival Arms gave me 1" groups, slung & prone, at 100 yds with good commercial ammo. A lot of lever rifles use receiver sights to good effect.......

lwaldron, it sounds like the problem might be that your sights are loose, not that the sights stink.
