I'm considering getting a Garand from the CMP sometime. I meet most of the qualifications, but I'm not sure about the requirement to have taken part in a firearms related competition or live fire exercise. I was in a skeet shoot a few years ago when I was 15 or so. But there is no copy of the results bulletin. Would the registration count or does it have to be a results bulletin?

Not Orest but . . . (that is a CMP forum joke)

I doubt if your skeet shooting would count towards that particular requirement. Check to see if your local range hosts an event related to CMP M1 shooting - many do.

You WANT to shoot High Power, you just don't know it yet.

Find a local club that does it and borrow a military rifle to shoot the event with. ANY score works for the purposes of CMP. ANY. Get your Garand and ammo and keep doing it.

Some clubs, including the one I shoot, have loaner M1s available (bought from CMP) and even selll CMP ammo at cost for new people to try out match shooting at some or all of the events. It is great fun and really can lead to the development of outstanding marksmanship skills for those who take it up as an interest.

As much fan as informal recreational shooting is, organized match shooting with concrete results that are comparable to other good shooters who shot on the same day with the same conditions, done on a regular basis takes the fun and challenge to a substantially higher level.

cmp

you will have to belong to a gun club that participate's in a cmp high power program .then shoot at least 1 sponsered high power shoot ,and get the result's ,you will use m1 garand's and probably sell you 30-06 ammo or you will provide it .some time's they have clu8b loner gun's you can use till you get your's . that's how our's is set up .or you can usally use any military issue semi automatic rifle . (ar 15 Ect ] then you down load the application and compleate it ans send it in with the rifle and payment for your selection . i think this is the web site http://odcmp.com/Sales/orderinginfo.htm

A DD214 is still a valid alternative to a shooting event to qualify for a CMP purchase.

But so many clubs host high power events it's not a bad idea to check at one anyway. Around here (Illinois) they usually include things like hands on field stripping, cleaning and correct lubrication for Garands and Carbines.

CMP will accept a conceal carry permit for the marksmanship requirement if you have that.

The OP says that a few years ago he was 15. If that is accurate, he isn't old enough for a carry permit yet.

On the other hand, if the OP is over 21, a carry permit is the easiest way to qualify if you already have one.

This is from the CMP website.
