I was thinking of getting myself a Garand and putting a synthetic stock on it. :barf: , I know.

How bad are the CMP Rack Grade M1s, if the "rifles in this grade are considered poor to fair"?

Poor to fair? I don't know what that means, but the only difference you're going to see in condition is the finish and barrel wear.

Sounds like the field grade would be a better value then?

Depends: do you want to rebarrel it to 7.62mm anyway? If you're building a "tactical" synthetic-stocked piece, that might be a better bet. Actually, maybe you can buy a receiver from CMP (with all internal parts) and save money just buying a new .308 barrel and synth stock.

I bought a Rack Grade in order to rebarrel it to 7.62, but my plans were devastated when it turned out to have a perfectly good Danish 30-06 barrel on it.

The best laid plans o' mice and men gang aft agley...

I just recently recieved a Field Grade (Greek) from CMP. It was'nt pretty out of the box. The finish on the metal is pretty worn, and the wood has certainly seen better days. But, by the "luck of the draw" (I guess) the barrel was in very good shape. About 1.5 on the muzzel, don't have a gauge for the TE measure. The wood can be worked on or replaced (mine still had a walnut stock, pretty beat, but I'm going to try to save it) the metal can be oiled or reparked. Pretty much anything can be repaired or replaced, that said, I would go with the field grade if you just want a shooter, or a servive grade if funds allow. Either way, when you open that first CMP carton and lift the shipping foam and see what the "luck of the draw" has sent you, whatever you receive, you will marvel at the design, funtion, and history of one of the greatest battle rifles of all time. If the rifle needs a little work to meet your satisfaction, I can tell you, it will develope into a passion. Enjoy.
