That must be an old ad or else they must have had a huge stock on hand for a while. Cold Steel hasn't made the SRK in Carbon V steel in some time. The model they now sell is made out of AUS-8 which I don't believe is as good as the Camillus made Carbon V was. Of course you can still find a Carbon V SRK on Ebay quite often and they are very well made tough knives.

Of course you can't go too wrong with a Ka-Bar. I haven't had one of the smaller ones, but I have had the full size and loved it. I had one with a micarta handle that I carried for many years as a Boy Scout. I haven't seen another like it ever. It was just like the USMC Fighting knife but it had a micarta handle. Quite a good knife.

If you're not absolutely set on either of those two knives, I'd recommend you look at the RAT Cutlery RC-4 which is a remarkably tough knife and an excellent all around design. They make a 5 inch and 6 inch as well, but the 4 inch blade really appealed to me. It's much bigger in the hand than it sounds, it is a very well made knife.

For $60 I'd take a Carbon V Cold Steel SRK over the Ka-Bar you mentioned, but you can get the D2 Impact for just $15 more and it is a much better knife than either.

nathan,

We keep saying get "Y", but you keep coming up with reasons to get "X". Go ahead and get the Cold Steel. As long as you don't use it you'll be able to get your money out of it because it is "Carbon V". I'd call Wideners and find out how many they have and get what you can.

Be aware that Cold Steel is one of the most commonly counterfeited knives that the Chinese churn out. I've handled some of the fakes and they're very very realistic. If Wideners has a bunch I'd run away.

Be careful, they fake everything about them, except the steel. The boxes are old style CS boxes to keep from being too easily compared to current products.

Be sure to buy from a reputable dealer. treeman29 on ebay is Jim Behring. You're dealing with a reputable person that knows what he's making available. You can go to his website (treemanknives.com) and look around for higher end knives and also contact him about the SRK. You can trust Jim.

Cold Steel SRK & MASTER HUNTER knives are made in JAPAN. I have never seen one marked CHINA. I can't speak about the other knives they sell. So I won't.

BTW, Texas legal limit is 5.5 inches and less, right ? So can someone owns a Cold Steel SRK 6 inches but can't carry it while hunting/camping or hikng in Texas ? Or one can own but it has to stay inside the house ?

There's a "hunting, fishing, and other sporting activities" exception to the law on carry of knives, so blade length isn't an issue if you're (legally) doing one of those activities.
