Today I was making the rounds of our local gunshops and I came across a really nice looking Colt 1911 Officer's Model that looked to be in outstanding condition, it really got my attention. But two things made me think twice, one was the price, he was only asking $499 for the piece which seemed very low to me. Second, this beautiful gun had a plastic trigger. A plastic trigger in a Colt 1911????? Is that right????
I know very little about late model Colt products but I have heard that some of their more recently manufactured guns aren't so hot. Could this be one of them? I wish I had written the serial number down but I didn't. It appeared to have a stainless slide and alloy frame with "Officer's Model" on the slide and had wood checkered grips. It really looked great until I saw that cheesy looking black plastic trigger. Should I have bought it for $499??

Colt did use triggers with plastic finger pieces, especially on the Officers ACP models.
These are just as sturdy as aluminum or any other trigger, and they're made of high-grade fiber-reinforced polymer, not some cheap everyday plastic.

It can't be TOO recent a gun, since Colt discontinued the Officer's Model back in the later 90's.

In good condition, that's a good price.

Should 'a grabbed it.

It's just the opposite, as far as very recent guns are concerned. The new-rollmark basic models absolutely smoke the basic Series II Kimbers and such (IMHO, blah blah). Now, go back 10 years, and there were issues.

That said, the plastic triggers--while perfectly functional--look like crap and should be replaced during the first detail strip.

It's easy enough to put in a new trigger. For $500 you should not let that deter you assuming the rest of the pistol is OK.

If it has a plastic trigger, it is an older gun, 1980s-1990s anyway. The Colts made in the past couple years (roughly) have come with aluminum triggers. Really old Colts came with steel triggers.

The newest production Colts are very nice. The guns made in the 90s were less consistent, but not all bad.

Sounds exactly like the series 80 officers model in my safe. With one exception mine has black wrap around the front rubber grips with silver colt medallions to accent the black trigger that I have left in place.

I paid about a 100 more than that. Mine is very accurate and functions great.

Plastic Trigger

Chief...if that trigger is the long one common to the 1991A1 series...
when you change it out, I'll give you 15 bucks for it and pay the
shipping costs to me. If it's a short plastic trigger, I'll give 10.
PM me if you're interested.

Offer 450 out the door for the pistol. If you've got cash in hand,
you can probably buy it.

I have two series 80 enhanced model Colts both purchased new in the early to mid 90's. One is the Officers model in polished blue, the other is a Commander in stainless and both have functioned flawlessly and seem to be very good guns. Mike
