I'm looking at a used Colt 1991 at a local Pawn Shop. It is in good condition and without a box or papers. It is the compact short barrell model all blued, no custom work. They had $499 on it but he told me he'd take $450 OTD. I don't know much about the 1911 so I'm not sure of its value. Are they identical to a 1911 or what?

It's worth that price.

1991 is the same gun as the rest.. Just a matte finish to reduce cost of production.

The Colt 1991A1 is a parkerized Series 80 Colt 1911 produced in the 1990s. I use a modified Colt Compact 1991A1 as one of my carry guns. These pistols had plastic triggers and mainspring housings, a feature that some people dislike along with the large, "billboard" rollmark. Thus, the prices have remained low. They are though, good guns. You can find info on the differences between the 1911 vs 1991 and Series 80 vs Series 70 in this stickied thread on the 1911 forum.

The Colt Compact is the Officer's sized version of the Colt 1991. It has one supposed weakness, the recoil plug and bushing. The plug is held in place with a lug that sometimes shears off due to metal fatigue. Most folks who use one hard replace the plug with a reverse plug. I went a step further and replaced the bushing too, with an EGW melt bushing, along with other modifications I like in a carry gun.

$450 is a good price for one of these pistols, assuming it is in good shape. Go here to learn how to check out a 1911.

Here is a pic of my modified Colt Compact.
