Combo guns

Yes a friend has a Savage not sure of the model number but it is a .22/ 20 gauge I believe. A really neat gun. His dad is a collector so we spend a lot of time on the lookout for neat stuff like this. I'd get one if I could buy it right.

I like my Savage M24 .22/410, its way handy for as lot of tasks and goes with me quite a few places.
As for the price, that's really subjective, if you liked the rifle, and bought it, its all yours and doesn't matter, enjoy,

I have a M24V, it is .357 mag over 20 gauge. My daughter took her first deer with it two years ago with the .357 barrel. I loaded the 180gr Hornady single shot pistol bullet loaded to the very end of the brass. Running about 1850fps out of the rifle barrel, broke one shoulers and clipped the heart and ended up under the skin of the other side. Beautiful mushroom, big doe, almost 200#'s.

As for the shotgun barrel l don't believe that I have ever shot it at game. Just shot a couple rounds out of it to make sure it worked.

I have had many, for half a century. First one was a Tenite stocked Savage 24 .22/.410 , I think my son still has it. I gave him a selector after his broke 10 years ago. I Had a WW2 Bring back Kreighof 16ga/ /8mm mauser from 1975 until I sold it in late 80s to help pay college tuition for my oldest. I had a 20 ga./ .357 Max Savage 24 V I gave to a New Zealand friend 30 years ago. It was plenty potent on deer he said :) , I also gave a 20/3030 away to a preacher who needed a hunting weapon and he said it met his need for 20 years before he passed away. I gave a 20/.223 to my middle son , who used it in Hiwaai in college and still has it in Oregon, it and the 20/.357 were outstanding examples of case hardening and walnut from Savage . I currently have two Springfield M6 .410/.22 Hornet combos, one in Stainless sans scope and the blued with a 1-3 Weaver on it. The scoped one served me well behind the truck seat for years and the stainless one is in my bugout pack. I also Managed to hold on to my older Savage marked .Valmet 412 in 12ga. / .308 which I really don't use and will be auctioned off in the years to come. These guns are handy no doubt, but not optimal tools for specific jobs .

Actually, the Savage 2400's WERE made by Valmet, but they are NOT model 412's... I still have one of those too,

They are head and shoulder above the 24's...

The 412's are a much stronger gun that the 2400's and were offered in more powerful cartridges... And they could be bought as a shotgun, combo gun or DR and all the bbls could be fit to any one frame, giving you multiples of bbls. for your 412.

The 412's also have there own quick detach scope mount too,

that works perfectly!!

Thanks for schooling me ! I knew it was a 2400 but assumed it was the same as a 412. How are 412s stronger ? Do they still have the sliding breech extension like the 2400 ?

I think combo guns like the Savage are neat, there is something about them that appeals to me. Maybe it's their utility or the minimalism of being out camping and using just one gun for sustenance... However, in practice I would rather actually hunt with a nice 20ga O/U or a good scoped bolt action 22 than a Savage 24 22/20ga...

I had a Savage 24 E-DL for a lot of years; very nice .22 WMR over a 20 gauge. It was a great squirrel-getter, and it would be a good option for a survival gun. But I found that for any hunting situation other than squirrels, I had other implements I liked better, and like Bushpilot, I ended up gravitating to other things and sold it off. I think about it occasionally, but then remember it was pretty heavy for what it was. Still have an old pic around, though ...

Ive always wanted a properly sized 22Mag/28ga. Can't afford something like that, probably never will.

A guy I knew used a model 24 .22mag/410 for everything when I was growing up. His rear sight was loose, but he still killed deer with every shot.

Even being a 24 aficionado, I only have three left, having given each of my sons an original Stevens 22/410 last Christmas. I have still only a 24V, 222/20, a 24DL, 22/20, and a 24C. I want a 357/20 and a 22WMR/20 and I will celebrate. I will quit hoarding. Maybe.

Fellow trapshooter, and fellow savage 24 enthusiast!
How about this....my local trapclub has a .410 event on Thursday nights. One night i shot it with my 24. It was fun, but not my best round, in fact i remember it being pretty bad. Lol

I always wanted one as a kid... never got around to getting one until a few years ago when a bud sold me his reasonable... well cheap. Honestly I have not shot it much but I like it and had always wanted one :) A 24 22lr/20 ga

I bought a Savage model 24 chambered in .22 lr/410 from a coworker for much of nothing. I ended up giving it to my sister as a Christmas gift. I still regret giving it away. Though I don’t know why, because it’s still in my safe!

I have an old Stevens model. 22/410 that was given to me by my Uncle when I was about 6 or so. It was my first 'dove' gun. I remember not being strong enough to open the action to reload so I would 'break' it over my left thigh. Most of the doves I shot were sitting in trees or on fence-lines. Shot my first dove in flight with this. Color-case hardened side plates. It's one I'll treasure and pass on.

I have four of them, two 24Vs in 22 Hornet/20ga; 30-30/20 ga; a regular 24 in 22LR/410 - and my favorite - a 24C campers companion in 22LR/20 ga. :)

So I guess you could say I like them.

I found the 24C especially useful in places where deer and small game ran concurrently.... LR for squirrels and 20 ga slug for bambi......

I had two Savage O/Us. The first was a Deluxe .22LR/20 gauge and the second was .357 mag/20 gauge. The second one had a separator welded between barrels at the muzzle, but it broke off one of the barrels.

The 22/20 had a barrel selector on the right side of the receiver, but it failed and the factory installed a barrel selector on a new hammer. They left the original selector on the side, and although it moved, didn't select anything.

Sights were not very good on either gun, so the rifle barrel was not good for small animals beyond about 25 yards. The .22/20 choke was super-tight and not very good for grouse, but would have been okay for ducks (couldn't carry rifle ammo when hunting ducks, so they lost some utility that way). Both guns were pretty heavy to lug around, so I didn't keep them many years.

[I think the next shotgun was a 20 gauge, ribbed, Sears pump with an adjustable choke. That was an excellent hunting gun and I used it for grouse, woodcock, ducks, deer (slugs) and skeet. It shot really nice and was light to carry. Slugs were almost as accurate as the rifle barrel on the .22/20 gauge (Killed a nice buck with it.)]

I had a Savage 20ga/22 mag that I bought unfired and sold for a good profit without ever shooting it. I was at Walmart and they had one of the Remington imported Bakial Spartan 22lr/410s that someone had ordered and never picked up.

What nice little combo gun that is. It has Russian walnut for the stock and black chrome for the finish. The buttstock even has cast off built into it. It came with 4 choke tubes. I never wanted a 410 until I got that gun and found out a 410 shell is much better than the internet folks would have you believe. I even made my own 410 loading set up. I also bought a .395 round ball mould and make 3 ball loads. Those shoot a 95gr RB at 1100+fps. Thats more power than a single .380 bullet. And do it three times. Within 30 yards I would be fine taking a deer with that load. Now I own four .410 shotguns because of that gun.

My Pop got me a used model 24 when I was a kid,,,
I had been begging for a Nylon 66 for my 10th birthday.

So, being the spoiled brat that I was,,,
I didn't show a lot of enthusiasm for the model 24,,,
Even though it was a good rifle and shot very precisely.

I came home one day not too long after my birthday and saw the gun wasn't on the rack,,,
I asked my Mom where it was and she said, "Go talk to your father."

Pop had sold it to a friend of his because I didn't like it,,,
I never got that coveted Nylon 66 either.

Gawsh but I was a prissy little brat back then.

I've always wanted one of those savage 24s. I see them here and there at the shows but they tend to command a premium price.

Sure would like a 22 LR/ 410 like armored farmer's. Most of the ones I see aren't quite that nice.
